new mapper trying

Hi, so I finally started to try and map a little.
I started up radiant (GtkRadiant 1.5.0 is that a bad choice?)
Anywayz, I think let’s load a map and see how it looks like.
Goldrush is supplied with ET or Radiant I think so I loaded the map.
First thought omg =O
Sure looks differend when playing the stuff.
But I’m not scared easily so I went on.
I recogniticed most parts of the map ofcourse and I moves around the map a bit.
No problems there.
So I thought, well let’s try and compile this baby.
So I tried almost every build there is but every one give me this error.

Entity 2324 (func_group) has shader index map “goldrush.pcx”
************ ERROR ************
LoadPCX: Couldn’t read goldrush.pcx

wtf does that mean??
isn’t a pcx file some old bitmap format??

What am I doing wrong?

ps. I know I’m a noob, I tried and search for this on the forum, but I got so many results (like always) that I didn’t know where to look.

Welcome to the headache inducing world of map making!

Instead of messing about with the goldrush map begin a new one of your own
Use goldrush as a reference
The goldrush map is complex because it contains so many aspects and elements of map that you will learn about as you go on.

Have you made a simple one room map yet? - perhaps with a light in it
It’s a good idea to start here, imagine what you want to find through it’s walls
once it’s working and go on from there.

warning though - virtual space creation can become addictive!

Welcome, and nice u tried yourself finally.

Yea, 1.5 sux imo… had a look at it and dumped it for 1.4 which you can still get from the radiant downloads.
Also do yourself a favour and get q3map2 and q3map2build by bobdev, it safes a lot of compiling time and frustration, get a nice tutorial on q3map2build here

.pcx image is used for terrain creation.
The .pcx and the terrain shader coincide for the ‘textured’ creation of a layered terrain. These things are linked through their entity properties.
Click on a portion of the Goldrush terrain (green+beige checkerboard while viewing the map in-editor) and press ‘N’. The entity properties window will be displayed.
-None of it should make any sense at all…but fear not… it will in time.


I suggest making an evening of reading the Radiant-manual…it will save you so many headaches in the long run.

that load PCX thingy has to do with the terrain. Its made with an image and several textrures and a shader but the images is gone and so it says its missing it :stuck_out_tongue:
