New map project RTBR

(RayBan) #1

im not shure where cptn triscuit is, i wanted to email him to let him know i started a
baserace style map, not as intense with upgrades, just a 8 obj capture in a map style
similar to trench toast, and 20 minute time limit only.

new game models, including pads and an animated model to indicate construction of
whatever obj was selected. hovering icons on the pads that bob/rotate to help the
flag carrier select which obj they want to build.

here’s a screen of a base from the field point of view…

im intending it to be sort of a battlefield type of map, so lots of barbed wire,
dragons teeth, foxholes and such.

(carnage) #2

that is a very sweet looking shel hole there

(RayBan) #3

here is a 4.4 meg movie showing a gate build test and the animated build model to
indicate construction

Wow thats great.
I like visual feedback for actions, situations etc. very much.
So I like the hovering icons about the building platforms very much.
Also the idea of the tools building the objective is a good idea.
But a little remark:
Not sure of the four tools.
May be only one in the middle.

(RayBan) #5

forgot about this thread… guess i should keep it going for now.

@nUllSkillZ
intially i did only 2 tools working, but with the standard build.wav from et it didnt seem
enough, and that short avi doesnt convey the whole package without the sounds, but
i am thinking of making a new parts crate that will be the same as the one that builds, just
more properly stacked up… so the idea is when you get it to the pad it becomes unpacked
and the tools working.

just started to redo the side rockwalls and add some mountain terrain, since the terrain is
mostly freehand poly’s that do not land on a specific grid pattern im going with alphamod
blending for it all.

just some screenies of the current progress, i still have to tweak the terrain here and there
plus add some form of foliage and tree’s.

but it’s slowly coming along… lot of models to make still.

(redRum) #6

great looking terrain, keep it up!

(Flippy) #7

hurry up with this map, i cant wait trying to get on the ledge :stuck_out_tongue:

nice terrain idd

damnnn why can everyone make blended textures while i have no idea how? :stuck_out_tongue: and plz dont point me to simland cos i read and and dont understand a thing…

(D3C0Y) #8

what if he clips it :D, then you’re boned :blah:

(Kic) #9

what do zou use for create terrain - FATE, easygen, gensurf?

(Flippy) #10

looks like handmade to me, as the edges are overhanging a bit… (dont think that’s possible with easygen, fate, gensurf??)

(Flippy) #11

what if he clips it , then you’re boned

Then ill find the spot where i can slip through the clip brushes

(RayBan) #12

i do all my terrain by hand, i have used easygen before, but even then i started out with a flat plain and dragged the verts to make the hills and
whatnot… for this terrain i just started out with a single triangle and cloned them as i went along, then made some brushwork, dragged verts/edges,
2 point clipping and so on… its got a ways to go, right now its a rudimentary rough terrain, but i’ll tweak it and smooth some points and add more blended
stages, some rocks here and there… maybe some new grass models and bushes… should look ok in the end, i want that edge walkable all around, but
it obviously needs some kind of cover… either bushes or some form of damaged walls here and there.

but thanks for the comments so far.

(Flippy) #13

because you are trying to make the edge walkable, just a little tip is to clip the highest edge… (if you look at the edge as the “ground”, then where the ground starts to get higher, make a clip brush). Cause if you have a hard edge between two triangles it might be possible to “walk” up using the edge as a path… (try it in fueldump near the allied ammo/medpack house… -> Go out of the house, turn right, and try it on the slope that is a little bit to the right of where you are looking…

(RayBan) #14

i have the area’s you cannot get to clipped, don’t worry… i already have that covered

(Kic) #15

please, can you give me some tutorial, how make nice terrain by hand, and what about textures on terrain
I learn 3 month mapping, I am able to create map, but this map must be interesting and goodlooking

thanks

(Flippy) #16

creating the terrain is easy (up to certain heights)… texturing it, i wouldn’t know…

to create the terrain, the basic steps you can take are:

use gensurf or easygen or smth to generate a blank terrain and open it in gtk radiant. This way you start with your “ground” as triangles.

Now select all triangles (or a part of them) and freeze the X and Y moving directions. To do this just click the [X] and [Y] buttons in the toolbar (dont touch Z)

Now, press V to start Vertex editing. Vertex editing is moving the vertexes (corners of brushes) around.
Because the X and Y directions are frozen, you can only move the vertexes in the Z direction, which is up/down.

Now just go crazy and move the vertexes up / down untill you are satisfied.

You can also move them in the X and Y directions if you like to get more detail in certain areas (or less, whatever)

http://simland.planetquake.gamespy.com//pages/articles.htm

Read the two rockwall tutorials first and then the terrain blending tutorial.

(Kic) #18

thanks, I try FATE on terrain, fate is better than easygen

(RayBan) #19

Shaderman beat me to it, but yeah… socks tutorials on rockwalls is excellent, thats
where i learned about it.

about terrain blending, there are quite a few threads on it here somewhere, i don’t have the
time to make a tutorial at the moment, maybe later on when i get some free time i can
scratch one up.

im putting in a custom model, sort of a homage to cptn triscuit for the baserace idea,
because i dont think mentioning him in a readme thats packed in the pk3 is something
most ppl would find/read… here is a render of it, the cereal box only will be in the map
in a few places.

even though i seriously doupt he looks like that… hehe, its some captain image i found
somewhere that i thought was comical looking.
