( New Map ) Battleship Beta-2

Hey all,

Way back in the nineties (late '99) there was a game called tactical ops (later called assault on terror).
It has a map called cargo-ship which is just a big ship with terrorists and hossies,
and the police has to storm the boat kill the terrorists and rescue the hossies (hostages).

Now I noticed in ET there are no maps with big boats, so I decided to make one. :smiley:
The ship is loosly based on the german ww2 battleship Scharnhorst.

I like the map, but its not the only one with a battleship.
City of lost children, or something like that name has ship, and antwerp_b3 also.
And there is another one where you also have to blast the engine of a ship.

Overall nice map, I think it has a bit high tris count…

some wishes :stuck_out_tongue:

  • the city wall higher, so that players with double jump can’t reach it, same for some other spots.
  • The doors to the Engine rooms, should give some msg when getting near. So that one knows what it is about without reading limbo.
  • Maybe a forward spawn for allies, might have missed it… , might be not needed…
  • Doors, overall there are many doors in the map which have to be used, while its unclear if a door can be used or not, and which team can. Maybe mark only Axis doors as such. And the rest different, while unuable doors are not marked at all.
  • On the other maps with ships, it was always same trouble, narrow doorways, and main target is difficult to reach due to a mix of narrow doorways and only one way to there, which makes it often easy to defend.
  • Lastly on the ship some ship overview could be put on walls at different places, describing current deck… this would help alot the orientation.
  • And some idea, on the ship there are 2 decks, under axis spawn I think, one could be opened… I haven’t seen the original ship, but I think it would be nice to have in the center of the ship some space to fight… I made screeny, and targeting with the crosshair at the deck.

I’ve just tested the map.
Very nice and great work on the ship!
It has a lot of details that creates a nice atmosphere.

The only thing I can think of that can be added, are ambient sounds, such as a generator sound, water sound (for the sea) and of course the general ambient sound.
Something with seagulls would be cool too, but don’t overdo it then. Only once at a certain amount of time (like the dog sound in Goldrush).

I think it would be a cool map to play on a server, so can’t wait for the ‘final’ version. Great job!

Thanks for checking out my map.

The tri count is getting quite high indeed.
During the creation of the map I have seen my FPS go down from a steady 90 fps to
75 fps in some spots of the map.
So adding more rooms in the ship will drag it down some more, but I’ll give it a try in a test map.
And also the sounds I still have to put in.
Great idea about the seagull noises b.t.w. !

Quick update:

I have progressed the map to next beta test stage : added blast-door toi’s, ambient sounds ( I like the seagull idea ), and a cargo barge ( re-textured the entire ship ) and added a very nice skybox.
The frame rate is more stable now ( download link is the same ).
