New factions at some point?

(BeyondSpectrality) #21

So, first, I’m typing from my phone. Please forgive any typo I might make. I think a third faction (in the current story) is only possible in an expansion and only as an outside/invading peoples. Aside from the story issue, I also find it hard to come up with a way to make a third faction different in the way they look. I also find it hard to imagine how they would fit in mission and story wise.

But I’m sure the talented guys could come up with something. Again my biggest issuue would be coming up with a unique look for them. But in the end myy opnion hangs with liking having only two factions.

Lastly, I’d rather see females for both factions before a third faction is even thought about.<3

Well, I don’t know that that would be too difficult… like, oh, for instance, a traditional military?

(BeyondSpectrality) #23

See, I already feel like we have our military side from the Security and if they added military I can’t see it being too different from security except more brown and camo…seems a little too generic for the amazingness that is Brink. But I guess that is an idea…Maybe a more radical military image.

Security is just trying to keep the peace. Perhaps if there was a third faction, like a private military organization that has come to the Ark to take it for themselves, changing it from a floating city, into a floating base, maybe you could work in a story where resistance and security join forces.

(Szakalot) #25

Whats the point then?
Its still A vs B situation, nothing changed; all that new features of the third faction could be distributed among the already existing teams.
Thats one thing, another is: how the hell are you going to make the maps? I believe teams will be more symmetrical than QW teams, but still some kind of a ‘security defends’ maps and ‘security attacks’ maps will be fixed in their team disposition, right?
Adding a third faction would basically force the devs to allow any team attack/defend anything - which is going to screw up the third point im going to make:

balance,balance,balance,balance,balance…
It took 10 years to ‘remotely’ balance 3 factions in starcraft, I honestly see no way of balancing 3 fps teams properly, unless they are basically the same, and the only thing changing are the skins.

Why go for such an extremely risky solution, when so little can be gained?

(brbrbr) #26

im don’t thing that space aliens anvasion from space or mutated soviet bears from arctica was can contribute to storyline well/good.
as well as other “cool” things.
but IP/Storyline advancement/evolnment in next SD games/DLC’s will be interesting, sure.
and/or in patches, maybe.

lol, battlefield is Nothing.
next topic/example, please.

@ Szakalot : I agree with you on this, but I was thinking more about an expension pack or sumthing, with new invaders or new “race” (some undersea humanoid could fit great as exemple, they are bored of all the wastes that the ark is rejecting in the sea and they want to take it over and destroy it).

The only gain here would be about extending the storyline, as brink is one of the more storylined FPS ever I guess its only fair to expend it. Again I dont really think it’ll change or screw many thing gameplay wise, just add some maps, some skins and you are good to go. The weapons can change too, its not like they didnt do a great job balancing a game as asymetric as QW, I guess they have a good grasp on how it works now.

OFC it’ll need some work, but in this world, nothing is free

But yeah I must agree that its really too early to talk bout that anyway, its just that when it comes to storyline I’m a big fan of depth and add-on.

Peace

(Szakalot) #28

oh i see, that makes more sense;

sure, but as you just said, its ‘a little bit’ early to talk about an expansion pack

(tokamak) #29

This is such a weird idea. All maps are tailored to have resistance fighting security storywise. You can’t just swap one team with another one like that. And what would that third faction be? It’s original owners vs immigrants. You might want to think about that before even suggesting it.

Even overcoming this weird bend in fluff then the only result would be a new style in clothing. Great. Simply adding female models to each side would make more sense.

read again, rinse and repeat

(tokamak) #31

Still, what does this add to the game? What use is a third campaign where two factions need to be the antagonist of the third one in turns? Have you thought this through at all?

(Apples) #32

It add depth, more storyline to continue this universe, why have all FPS universes to be static? I allways see sequel with new gameplay/features etc, if the gameplay is good (I still have hope and faith…) why dont gamedev dont use it more deeply…

the “submarine humanoid race” or the “military force” storyline seem to fit well to me for a third faction introduction.

(DoubleDigit) #33

I prefer top notch multiplayer gameplay, fun game and thousands of ways to kill people instead of some useless ‘third’ faction or story.

(Apples) #34

yeah so basically a finished game (as I stated billion times if you cant read), the question is more on the background.

Well, I got your points everyone, I guess I summed up all I wanted to tell.

Peace

(Brandmon) #35

Well to be honest, and for anyone taking this argument seriously, I’d rather first get to know how this one turns out and then I might speculate on the possibility of new factions.

(brbrbr) #36

i guess its pointless to “speculate” before release, as well as raising noise around topic.

(signofzeta) #37

An expansion can add a new faction, just that certain maps will have that new faction, and certain maps won’t. The stock maps for the original Brink will only have Resistance vs Security. Adding to the story is like nothing. Just a few text, reskinned weapons, different base outfits, and you have a new faction.

New faction can be anything, like I dunno, mercenary faction who fights for the side that gives them more money.

Maybe there can be a campaign where security fights resistance. Depending on the outcome of the battle, if the security wins, then the security bribes the mercs to fight the resistance in the next map. If the resistance wins, it is the other way around. In the next map, replace the winning team with the mercenary team, and the map is to be balanced in such a way that if Mercs are attacking and Resistance is defending, or if security is attacking and mercs are defending, then it should play well.

(tokamak) #38

How does this add depth and gameplay value? Just the usual ‘more = more’ approach?

(Apples) #39

Are you serious with the “gameplay” word in your phrase? (i.e. Timestart’s sig)

Considering the storyline alone I think some new factions can add depth because it’ll bring new ideas and perspective of evolution for the game, as the more you have to build your world, the more you can explain how it works, why it works like that and what people are fighting for, resistance vs security is a scheme seen like billion time, where no-one is truely evil and they all have the “rights” to fight, but some new invaders or some secret community hiden on the ark as exemple can add more storyline (ergo : depth IMO), with new interaction beetween the faction, new evolution of the ark’s people decisions etc etc.

But as you seems entitled to your opinion and dont even care to read what I said (like I wasnt talking gameplay wise for instance), well I’ll let you down nao. I’m open to argument or discussion but the :

“please explain?” “please explain” “please explain” when you truely dont seem to at least read what was said tend to annoy me, have a good day sir.

Peace

You’re the one claiming that this contributes anything, hence I’d love to hear examples (besides fish people…) instead of assertions.
