New custom map: Attack, by Loffy

(Loffy) #1

Hi ET freaks!
This time I have made a map for intense and lethal fragging in an insane indoor environment.
The name of the map is dom_attack.
It has an easy-to-understand and no-nonsense layout: All fragging takes place on floors (there are both stairs and fast elevators!) and the Axis and Allied bases are identical and mirrored.

The map is 3-dimensional, ie I tried to make it with a “non-flat feeling”, and the player will have to look both up and down if he or she wants to stay alive.

The map is made primarily for the mod ET Domination, by Lanz, and it works perfect for both the Powerball-mode and the CTF-mode.

It has been tested and OK:ed for the vanilla 1.0 and the patched ET Domination installs.

Both teams have an initial respawn-time of 2 seconds. Whenever a team score, that time will increase with 1 second.
For example, if the Axis scores twice, their respawn-time will now be 4 seconds.
NB!: When the respawn-time reaches 10 seconds, it will not increase anymore. Max respawn-time on this map is 10 seconds.

Download this map, dom_attack, here (Thanks ChiemseeMan!):

You can also download the map here (but this link might be dead due to overload on some days):

(These screenshots show that Loffy has just found the Photoshop filter “glass” to play with.)

What are you waiting for, soldier? You want to live forever!?
Get your hands on that powerball and score!

the blur effect on screen 2-3 is a photoshop filter no ?

(Loffy) #3

Yup. Filter “glass” (although it looks very much like heat shimmer or however it is spelled in english).
I also use the Edit>layers, to lighten/darken the images.
I wish I was better at photoshop, but I guess we cannot master every programme there is.

Nice one Loffy!

Much better than the madness version IMO. That one was just too mad for my taste.

Nice map =)

Thx Pytox!

Just downloaded the dom mod and tested your map. It looks pretty cool. The only thing I saw that looked a little off was the scale of some of the textures seemed a little large. Mainly the floor and wall textures. Other than that it looks like a really fun map. Nice work.

Tranny, what can I say, you are absolutely right.
I applied texture and hit Ctrl + S and streched the textures 1,5 times in both directions. Why? Well, this is somehting that is typical of me: I just wanted to try it.
It seems that in every map I make, I try stuff “just to see what happens” and “let’s see how it works”. Sure, it is not a unique thing, most mappers do this I’m sure, but I do it all the time.
In sum, I applied the tex and thought: “hey, let’s try streching it 1,5 times and see how it works!”

PS. This makes me think of a great northamerican philosopher and educational theorist who often said “learning by doing” is a good way to obtain new knowlegde. Who was it? Anyone?

(psychosanity) #10

I believe you refer to John Dewey: American, Pragmatist, and a great proponent of experiential learning.

(Loffy) #11

Exact!
You hold a PhD in education too? I’ve read some Dewey-books in my job. He is a great writer that folks in the US should be proud of because he has written some marvelous text of high quality that make an academic like me go “Woa, this IS good! I wish I could produce something like this some day!” (Similar to the feeling I sometimes get when I walk around in a map made by a good mapper  )

No, I actually never finished college, lol. But I consider myself an academic (intellectual?) nonetheless, albiet mostly self-educated: I read textbooks like most avid readers read fiction. Mostly philosophy, chemistry and physics, and I agree…Dewey is eloquent and a master of the clear and consise. His writing is not as “chewy” as most philosophy tends to be, but he still makes his point and covers his philosphical ass.
