can somebody say a bit more about that “if the enemy is behind you, we will speed you up a little bit” part in the interview
if i interpreted it right, this has something to do with controllers compared to mouse keyboartd… what exactly gets speeded up a little bit? do you move faster or is just the sensitivity of the controller increased?
related to that: will there be some sort of auto-aim for controllers? maybe only on consoles?
The speed up is with regards to the rotational sensitivity, letting you turn around to catch people behind you more easily.
i see. thx for the response. i quess this is regardeless of if its mouse or controller.
Yep. It’s a subtle thing though. You tend to not feel it happening unless you specifically look for it, but it’s there, just helping you aim toward the thing you’re signalling (via the direction you’re aiming) that you want to aim toward.
It’s not a special “rotate 180 button” or “snap to target” anything like that. It’s just part of the feel of the turning. Feels nice and organic.
Much like the SMART system, it’s not intended to make aiming a non-skill. It’s there so that it’s more straightforward to do more impressive moves. You wouldn’t, for example, be able to track an enemy while sliding past them fast without this system (you’d normally have a top speed). It allows you to pull off, on console, the kind of rather impressive aiming feats that the PC allows you to without any aim assistance tweaks.
Basically, we didn’t want to bring the aim controls on PC down to match the natural affordances of a console analogue stick. We wanted bring up the responsiveness and target aquisition timing and reliability and tracking up to the standard of PC (which is sorta implicitly impossible, but you can do a lot to mitigate the differences with clever tweaks to inputs based on targets in the scene).
No, it’s intended for controller only. Controllers need the help. Mouse doesn’t.
(Although weirdly, having this aim assist on with mouse control it doesn’t actually upset my mouse aiming, I find. I know that’s sacrilegious, but don’t worry. It’s definitely going to be off by default on PC)
it’s for the controller to behave more like a mouse can.
Speaking of controllers and mice, I really wish SD would reconsider mice on the PS3. I understand the PS3 multi community is quite small already but I don’t know anyone who prefers the controller over the mouse on PS3 as far as shooters are concerned.
Also, Ham doesn’t look as sexy as he usually does in this video… maybe the camera angle.

I think that just means you need to learn to aim with the mouse Bezzy!
I really like the idea behind speeding up a 180 degree movment on the control pad although by the time Brink comes out I should have built my PC so it would matter to me
But I do really like that Idea wish some other games had come up with that in the past…
I think it would be better if they came up with a device that allowed you to be reasonably precise without requiring a table, err… I mean “mousing surface”. Like, say, a trackball.

Heh, that was at PAX, where I was having to work the back room, being one of Paul’s co-op buddies during the demo. I didn’t expect to do any press, and was surprised when they pulled me out of my cave.
In other news, I’ve lost about 25 pounds since then, so my wife think’s I’m sexier now :o
I really hope the next generation of game controllers ditches the d-pad in favour of a track ball. That would be awesome!
As long as you losing weight helps the game’s quality I’m okay with it… No wait, I even ask you to carry on losing weight.
But to be honest some footage that is more actual than the latest vids would be more interesting anyway.
Please note that this was not meant as abroad hint in any way.
Or ditch the controller all together and recognize usb humans. Every new born these days has at least a firewire connection I heard… :stroggbanana:
