Netcode Issues?

What. Up.

First off, loving the game. I quickly had a browse through the tech support section and didn’t see a topic about this. When playing, I quite often noticed me being shot when I was clearly (at least from my perspective) behind a wall or an object, or…well, you know, something to protect me from bullets (teammates work too ^_^). At first, I just thought it’s my horrible internet, living in a student accommodation which uses routers from 2006, so lag is something I have to get used to or play in off-peak hours. After watching a few streams I noticed others are having the same issue.

I’m well aware that the game is in closed beta and many improvements are sure to come, but I just wanted to point that out. When Battlefield 4 came out it was a massive disaster due to netcode issues, as some of you may remember. Of course, this is already a billion times better than whatever Dice came up with. Guess what, now it’s fixed and about 50% of the playerbase is gone already.

Thoughts? Anyone else noticed this?

Yeah well it’s a combination of hitscan weaponry and client-side hit detection of the engine.
It doesn’t happen often if people stick to playing within their own regions and have good ping. It does give you the benefit of being able to play in other regions without getting you screwed by your ping that much but obviously it’s not ideal.

Well, just something I wanted to put out there and was wondering if it happens often to others. I pretty much played the whole day yesterday and about 4-5 times I saw the bullet trajectory literally go through big chunks of objects in the killcam. It’s not too often on the overall count of deaths so doesn’t bother me as much, BF4 was much worse like I said.

My ping is usually around 150 and I have noticed that sometimes I will die before even seeing my opponent.

But hey, that’s lag for you, and I have no complaints.

However, this logically means that the same must be happening in reverse. From my opponent’s perspective they clearly won the duel, and then a fraction of a second later they die any way.

I’m sure this can be frustrating but here’s the thing: there really isn’t any other alternative.

Think about it. If anti-lag gets taken out of the game then it means we’ll all have to start ‘leading’ our targets. And even though this would allow us to party like it’s 1999 again it will also introduce problems.

I dunno about you guys but my ping fluctuates from time to time, so the amount by which we’d need to lead our targets will keep fluctuating as well.

So anti-lag actually helps all the players, not just the people with low pings.

Secondly, removing anti-lag won’t actually improve the quality of life for the players with low pings, because those pings already give them an advantage in terms of reaction time.

All it will do is screw over players with bad connections, and there really isn’t an upside to that.

If this game is going to enjoy the same success as the other big F2P games then it needs to copy their good ideas.

And one of the reasons why LoL has been so huge is that you can play it with a coal-fired laptop, on an 64K ISDN line.

From Zimbabwe.

F2P games are driven from the bottom. They need to be as accessible as possible.

So while I understand that players may find anti-lag deaths annoying they really are the lesser of two evils.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining, with my POS internet I am pleasantly surprised the game runs as smoothly as it does, nothing compared to CS where with a minimum of lag spikes I go warping through the map.

I just wanted to understand whether this is something purely caused by bad connection or there might be some kinks in the netcode others with decent connection are experiencing too.

There is definitely things that can be improved with regards to the netcode but for me it is not to bad.

On the bright-side though Splash Damage are wanting Network Programmers for Unreal Engine 3, so hopefully they will improving the netcode in due time.

Heck, if only I had some more experience within the games industry; my computer networks and communications knowledge is not to shabby ha
