Nerf Rhino

(Fap Fap Master) #1

Rhino as of right now has a massive lead over all the other mercs, his ability to hold choke points with a med station is real overpowered.

(god1) #2

He’s complete garbage past shotgun range.

(Daergar) #3

There are so many counters to him. One Fragger nade. One Nader. One Vassili. Let alone anyone doing some teamwork.

That said; the problem is that none of the above is free, so you can end up with a team that contains no real counter.

Had this happen during a Chapel yesterday, two Rhinos and two medics locked down the EV near the end-station for ten minutes since no one had the mercs or the brains to actually bust the nest open (neither my Fraggy, Nader or Vassy was in the rotation, silly dailies).

That was a painful loss, completely due to counters requiring purchase, and to a lesser degree the daily missions ruining a balanced loadout.

This is hardly a Rhino-specific problem, people doing teamwork on a pub will always dominate, hardly matters what they use. He plays just fine at first glance.

Fap Fap master, Rhino came out yesterday! How about you play the game before crying nerf on the boards?

(Parmenion) #5

Rino is op indoor but he lack of range on open map.
He is vulnerable to explosif too.

Not even 2 days old and people refuse to learn new tactics to fight new mercs… Rhino is fine, fight him like you would a heavy in TF2.

(Solid Stache ~NaC) #7

this so hard. Just continually use hit and run tactics and make sure you destroy the healing station/medic first and he’ll go down rather quickly.
A lot of people who complain about mercs being overpowered are talking out of their arse.

Most people don’t have a lot of the mercs unlocked. They only die a bunch of times and think that the merc is OP. Especially if the merc is recently released.
(GregHouseMD) #9

I don’t think Rhino is necessarily OP. Just highly effective in pubs, assuming there’s a medic. Otherwise he’s just a point piñata.

However, you can’t really fight him the way you’d fight a Heavy in TF2. Because Rhino actually survives sniper headshots. If he’s on a healing station ( see the above paragraph ), any follow-up shot would have to be very quick to even kill him.

Grenades are the obvious counter. I ran into something like what was described earlier, except it was a single Rhino/Aura on the final objective of Bridge. It was awful: no one had explosives but me, and I just couldn’t blow up 3 Auras and Rhino by myself. I probably should’ve brought Fragger for that sweet, sweet frag grenade.

(Glot) #10

do not nerf Rhino. he is weaker than fragger in 1v1, and he+aura is weaker than either Fragger+Sawbonez or Fragger+Aura.

(Szakalot) #11

I imagine the main problem here is how easy it is to play Rhino. Very low skill ceiling, but pretty good power for how little ability you need to have.

(_Sniff_) #12

Nader is also very proficient at killing Rhino. While also taking out the medic station around him. She plays peekaboo very well.

(LifeupOmega) #13

Rhino is, surprisingly, completely fine. I expected him to be the hell that Heavy was in TF2, just stick a medic to him and dominate. Yet Rhino actually has reliable counters for the most part, and is very easy to shut down if he’s not in your face.

What I found out about Rhino yesterday was Fragger will destroy him. If you see him and your minigun isn’t spun up you die. If you keep your minigun spun up and he hears it then you die to a nade. He’s pretty fun in specific areas of the map but if people know you’re there then they just avoid that area or counter you. And you have to do a lot more good shotgun work to stay alive than you do minigun.

I think Kira will be a lot more viable in competition than Rhino even though Rhino can be situationally useful/fun. He can destroy a generator pretty quickly with his minigun and could do a good job holding down the barricade room on bridge. And in pubs, without healers, he’s more of a liability than using Skyhammer or Fragger.

(Eox) #15

Found one in one of my games. From what I learned : minigun’s DPS is horrendous at close range, but quickly falls at longer ranges due to the minigun’s high imprecision. This makes him extremely dangerous indoors and in tight spots, especially if medics comes in the party. However, he’ll have a hard time if he tries to sneak outside.

Don’t hope taking him out at close range : Proxy and Aura will be shut down by him extremely easly. You can also add to this Sawbonez and Bushwhacker : I doubt those two will be able to get rid of Rhino efficiently. Skyhammer is somewhat a neutral choice.

Nader seems to be his main counter to me. She can dish out 80 damage in his face pretty easly (he’s the slowest character available), she can harm him out of his line of sight, and her nades are very fast to come back : she can get rid of him pretty easly, even if he’s inside a building. Fragger is another great one, but he only have two frag grenades, with a pretty big cooldown, and those two won’t one-shot him, so he’ll be slightly less reliable IMO. The efficiency of those two is further increased because a lot of enemy players tend to go very close to him (and not only medics), so you can expect to get rid of a good part of the team with your explosives. I already managed to kill three people at one with my grenade launcher simply by spamming at a Rhino player.

Arty, Kira and Vassili feels also like nice counters to him, but they won’t work that well as long as he stays indoors. This makes Rhino especially frustrating to fight aganst when he camps the first objective of Underground (and probably some more), at least as long as you don’t have a competant Nader/Fragger.

Fletcher may look like a good choice, but you can’t make your sticky bombs go in corners as well as Fragger or Nader do. And they are not as spammable as Nader’s GL, and neither as powerful as Fragger’s nades. You can still hope to trap him though, and his slowness make him a good target for Sticky Bombs. I doubt he’ll work that well against him though.

I wouldn’t say he’s OP, but in pubs he’s really hard to fight indoors. I look forward to see Stoker and Red Eye in game : pretty sure those two will be two other great choices against him.

Med stations can be destroyed by explosives. Rhino can also be affected by explosions.

Fragger, Nader, Fletcher, Skyhammer (Yes, that one class everyone gets for free) all can all throw explosives. Take down their med station with splash damage then shoot him in the head.

Don’t forget about the many other mercs incoming. Some have direct counters to rhino and choke holds (ie, Thunder).
