Need help with Alpha Channels

(Higgins) #1

I have 6 so called alpha textures for my map. I used photoshop and deleted the back ground so the alpha channel showed up (grey and white checker board thing). I saved them as 32 bit tga’s.

In the editor I see them with white back grounds, and in game it is also the same, what is wrong? has any one got any tutorials on alpha textures for ET using photoshop 7?

There’s a problem with Photoshop 7:
It does not save 32 bit TGA correct.
But there’s a patch available.

Thanks for the tip, I got the patch and installed it.

I opened up all my images that I wanted to be alpha channels in Adobe ImageReady 7.0. I used the magic wond and deleted the white areas so the checker board back ground showed. Saved them as Photoshop format. Opened them in PS, saved them all as tga’s 32bit.

In radiant I still see the textures with white back grounds.

Here is the shader I use for them:

{
	cull disable
	nomipmaps
	nopicmip
	surfaceparm nomarks
	surfaceparm alphashadow
	surfaceparm pointlight
	surfaceparm trans
	implicitMask -

Would you know why this is still happening?
Thanks

IIRC, radiant won’t actually show the transparency… Have you tried in-game?

From the Shadermanual:

If you use qer_trans on a shader whose qer_editorImage has an alpha channel, the transparent areas of the editorImage will also be transparent in the editor. To keep the solid areas of the editorImage opaque, use a qer_trans value of “0.999”. Useful for grates, windows, fences, etc.

Might help. Don’t know.

I tested my map and the alpha textures do not work. Maybe I did the alpha channel wrong. I should look at a photoshop tut on alpha channels.

(Balr14) #7

Shader should have:

alphaFunc GE128

Transparent areas should be black on alpha channel, non-transparent areas s/b white.

I think I have done it wrong. I am not sure if I have made an alpha channel, I can see the checker board back ground in photoshop, but my textures in game have white back grounds.

You probably are in need of a good alpha-texture tutorial.

Check this http://www.modsonline.com/Tutorials-read-126.html. Very detailed step-by-step tut.

Maybe the next time such a question should go into the Q3map2 forum, not into Mod-making.

I couldnt decide if make textures for et was moding, or mapping. But thanks for the link, ill read it later.
