need ET mappers, all level of mapping wanted.

(nForce) #1

I need some people who are willing to do a very small job or might give me some advice, the channels is #mapset on irc.quakenet.org , i’d be very grateful if one or two people would consider coming there to speak to me about a small project.
nForce.

More information on the project and what kind of help (brush work, modeling, scripting, etc) you need would be helpful

(nForce) #3

it’s more along the lines of converting a map, i can only say more on #etmaps (think rtcw), and its for a reason. any people interested would be a great help

(Mark.C) #4

I would love to help you out, but i don’t have irc

(nForce) #5

anyway i can get in touch with you then? i need assault, keep, castle, and sub from RTCW

Have you asked the authors for permission?
Because you have to respect copyrights.

(Java.Lang) #7

The legal discussion is silly because clearly there is no money to be made to convert these maps. If he was doing it as a business venture, THEN it would be a matter of the rights to use it.

(Ifurita) #8

I find it silly that so many people find it acceptable to “make free” with one of ID’s, Grey Matter’s, or Splash Damage’s maps, but when Sin makes free with one of ours … OMG, grevious crimes have been committed. Seems like somewhat of a double standard.

(Java.Lang) #9

Regardless, the impression is going to be made on the converter of the map, not the public who play it. If you port a map because you lack creativity of doing something original, just expect to get a lot of flak, because you now must live to a very high standard, a standard way higher than any custom as people will expect it to be true to the original.

I hope I did not give the impression that I was in favor of conversions.

Even so, if he’s planning to release it free, the original authors haven’t. So… people could get the free version that he has produced, and wouldn’t be as interested in the non-free versions. Unfortunately copyright does come into pretty much everything even if at first glance it doesn’t appear to.

I think it is more of common courtesy to the original author then anything else. Is it so hard to seek permission before ‘copying’ some one’s work?? I could have easily have grabbed your cobweb textures and used them without you knowing. I thought it ‘proper’ to ask you approval first and give you full credit. I think most times, the original author/creator is more than willing to give permission (well, maybe not for an entire map…).

I know I would be a little ‘ticked’ if someone borrowed something from my map without asking to use it first. Especially since it’s so easy to PM some one…just my opinion

i dont mean it in a harmful way, and i dont want it to be seen as copying merly being able to play RTCW maps in ET, not stealing any bodies work, making it more accessible(?). i would like this done just so everyone can enjoy wolfenstien maps in ET, also maybe get them used in some competitions, and as to asking the author, i dont know the authors name except he works for ID, and i doubt thyell allow this :frowning: , just someone who will help the community

If you cannot spend the time to find out who created the original maps then you are certainly going to make alot of people angry. Its very simply just check the credits of the game. They will inform you that the game was made by GreyMatter (SP) and Nerve Software (MP). Here’s a little helper, This is the website of the company which made the maps you want to “convert” … http://www.nervesoftware.com/

Assuming a set of maps which plays well on one engine/system will automatically make a good set on another engine/system is flawed. This thread is pointless. If you want help with something, use the help wanted sticky thread. That is what it exists for!
