Ok, let’s fill this in: from what country do the mercs come? I have this so far:

Skyhammer - Scotland
Nader - Germany
Arty - China
Kira - Japan
Aura - USA
Proxy - England
Bushwacker - Australia
Vassili - Russia
Fletcher - Nigeria
Sawbonez - USA
Fragger - ?
Sparks - ?
Rhino - ?

Fragger is surely as American as they get!

Sparks I’ve been wondering about. Really, really wondering. She’s got a vaguely Central / Eastern European accent, yes, and does that stereotypical thing where she drops the indefinite article. Sometimes she sounds more German, though - including one of her taunts, which is German. Which makes me wonder if she could be, I don’t know, Swiss?

My money would be on Polish, though.

Bushwhacker is definitely not Australian. He’s also about as American as they come. Probably an NRA member and Republican voter.

Also, while Vassili’s got a Russian-sounding name, his voice sure isn’t. Which always struck me as weird. Maybe he’s a dual citizen!

rhino is english

(MasoN) #4

bushwhacker is actually from the USA by his acent

Vasilli is english by the sound of it. And listening to his taunts give the impression that he is a grocerystore worker who was also a UBER L33t PR0 Snip0r in shooter XY. That became a Merc to get away from his parents.

Sparks sounds eastern europe / former sowjet region. The taunt that sounds german says “eine kleine bang musik, nein” which while german words, is not a real german sentence (atleast none that makes much sense). Google however came up with a big bang theory skit which featured the phrase “eine kleine bang bang musik” and the second hit was to a czech metal band “eine kleine bang bang”. So I would guess that she is czech atleast it would match her accent.

You’d think with a name like Vassili he’d be at least part-Russian seeing as his (I’m assuming here) namesake is that of a Soviet sniper.

(GregHouseMD) #7

I thought about that, too. Czech Republic, I mean. I’m still confused, though, because besides her taunt, some of her other lines sound decidedly German ( or German English ), rather than Central European.

This is why SD need to reinstate the merc bios. These things bother me more than playability, FFS!

(Aazhyd) #8

Ever heard of “Eine kleine Nachtmusik”?

(sharpSubmarine) #9

Yeah, I thought that too. Maybe the devs wanted to give a reference to Vasily Grigoryevich Zaytsev, one of the greatest snipers of WW2. But it’s just speculation.

(Reddeadcap) #10

Changed your list a bit for more detailed on the USA characters, early beta characters and explanations on some

[/quote] Like Gi.An said Many of his lines really suggest hes meant to be an analog to a gamer trying to sound cool, he took the namesake of a famous sniper and many of his lines suggest he used to work at a grocery store stacking shelves, some taunts mention aimbot, missing due to lag and went to the evac zone just to get away from his parents.

I hear some familiar voices. Bushwacker sounds like someone from Borderlands? Maybe Dr. Zed?

(firebrickRetreiver) #12

Bushwacker is most definitely American, it clearly says in his bio that he taught industrial arts in “some of United States’ roughest high schools”

Sparks is confirmed Swiss, don’t remember from where though.

(GregHouseMD) #13

Really? Called it!

Would be sweet to have confirmation, though.

(Gi.Am) #14

I don’t believe it. I mean maybe she was swiss in a older iteration of the game (or it’s one of her fake IDs). But her accent is pretty far away from being swiss. Would be the first voice performance in DB that is off.

@Fuze: I wrote this without has accent in mind. He seems to me like a Crocodile Dundee type of guy. An Australian would have definitely been a bonus to the game. I don’t like tons of generic Americans, we already have too many of those.

So it was more wishful thinking than actual thinking.

Anyway, have you played Borderlands The Presequel? It’s full of Australian accents and a lot of fun.

To be fair, I can see how his stereotypical ‘Australian hat’ would throw you off.

There is no way Bushwacker is australian. His name is Aussie slang, but his accent is a really generic Texan sort of accent, with slurs and slang.

I want a Kiwi (New Zealander) represent, and some Australian please.

According to Wikipedia:

Bushwhacking was a form of guerrilla warfare common during the American Revolutionary War, American Civil War and other conflicts in which there were large areas of contested land and few governmental resources to control these tracts. This was particularly prevalent in rural areas during the Civil War where there were sharp divisions between those favoring the Union and Confederacy in the conflict. The perpetrators of the attacks were called bushwhackers.

It makes perfect sense.

(Aazhyd) #20

Bushwacker, an Australian term for someone who spends his or her time in the bush.
(Source: wikipedia, one of multiple meanings)

Wow, he shaved his moustache off? He looks much “cleaner” on this picture than in game.
I like the dirty version better.
