What is the best or most used map editor for W:ET on Win32 platform? I need only the name of utility and a version number.
N0zer0's questions
It must be gtkradiant. Then it’s hard to tell which one is more popular 1.4.0. or 1.5.0. I use the newest 1.5.0 (26.04.2007) and I love it. Comparing to older 1.5.0 versions and random 1.4.0.
I hate 1.4.0. I found it bugged and not as clear as 1.5.0. Altho I’ve used only one version of 1.4.0.
It is true that older versions of 1.5.0 had some bugs. But in the newest version I’ve find one bug that annoys me (been used almost from the release). In windows xp home when I change the windows user (just like log out but you remain logged into the win) it usually results radiant crashing. So I just close radiant then.
Oh yeah not another 1.4.0 vs 1.5.0 “war”… I’d say try both and pick up one that you like more. But be sure to try the newest 1.5.0. ^^
Btw. I have 1.4.0 on my comp too. I open it when somebody asks me something and he uses 1.4.0. Everything I need is on 1.5.0. and is very cool and easy to use.
ok
never mind. It doesn’t botter me. I’m using 1.4.0 and i’m happy with it:)
flexible is the wrong word for it, but it has some points over 1.4(flexible is what 1.4 has, ex brush manipulation[you can get more complex brushes])
let him try both and decide, both are good overall but depends on how he’s planning to use it.
You can do same brushes in both editors if you know what to do. :stroggtapir: Altho it is bit harder in 1.5.0 in the beginning but when you learn how it behaves, it’s as easy. But there’s usually many methods. And making very complex brushes isn’t clever anyway imo, debends on the situation tho.
I have new question. Gtkradiant supports only .map and .reg extensions. Project type is W:ET but .pk3 files don’t contain such file format.
I have read that .map files must be converted into .bsp file format and then zipped to .pk3 file. But is it possibe to convert back .bsp files to .map for re-editing?
Well, thats called de-compiling(use search) and should be done only for learning/reworking with permission, or when you lost your work.
You use a .bat file which contains some scripts about the information to send to q3map2 and it converts a .bsp into .map with some(or many) misaligned textures and some bugs.
You can do it in 1.5.0! If you customise your menu. For example instead of “-meta -v” you put there “-convert ase” to convert the bsp to ase. To decompile a map put there “-convert -format map” or “-convert map” I don’t remember.
The bad thing in 1.5.0 is that you can’t add slots to the compile menu, so you would need to remove some others, UNLESS you do it straight from the file. I have my own customized build menu. The advantage is I can do it all straight from the radiant.
How to customize your build menu and add “build slots”:
Ok I assume you have 1.5.0. and windows xp. Go to C://documents and settings/yourname/application data (hidden folder)/radiantsettings/et.game/ and edit the build_menu.xml file. It is really simple language so you should be able to figure it out yourself. It took me a while to find the file. Remember to have radiant closed when you do this!
In 1.4.0 I haven’t been able to find the file that contains that info, and there’s no customize box in my version. It might be “hardcoded” in 1.4.0.
I tried this for decompiling map XY, q3map2 version 2.5.17:
q3map2 -game et -convert -format map xy.bsp
Result:
xy.bsp is version 46, not 47
What does it mean?
All I can guess is that you are trying to convert q3 map not ET map:
sof = 01
moh = 04
q3 = 46
rtcw = 47
et = 47
Thanks. Xy map (its name is not interesting) is an ET map. But I’m going to try with rtcw parameter.
had the same problem with some jedy academy map ( i even had the source ;D)
then just compiled in ET format and everything worked fine… without any textures tho
Decompiling process was successful. Then I opened the .map file. But I can see only grids if it were an empty map. What should I see? I know… rtfm. But which one?
Where can I download GtkRadiant 1.4.0? It has been removed from qeradiant.com and ZeroRadiant section. Links given by Google are old. I found only a Jady Academy related special 1.4.0 edition (~60MB).
I have a good tutorial on my native language which recommends only version 1.4.0 for beginners. The author writes that 1.5.0 isn’t good. It may be wrong but I would like to follow it.
id software ftp
tho the linux ver didn’t work for my ubuntu 7.10 :S and im too noob in linux.
bsp is version 46, not 47
lol i tried to compile a unreal tournament 2004 map into .bsp^^ the same error occurres…
the bsp had 256kb
do you think it is possible in any way to use a UT map for ET?
