My views on DB at its current state

(FalC_16) #1

Hi All

I usually don’t make threads and post long essays. But I thought I’d wrap up couple of points and see what is your view on that.

First of all I love Dirty Bomb. Its one of the best, if not the best F2P game I’ve ever played. I am a big fan of Battlefield series and played almost all of them since BF1942. I actually got to know about DB via rivaLxfactor who is one of the popular BF youtubers. Ever since then I play DB like every day. It’s been a year now. And there is the catch, after recent developments and last couple of patches I have lost interest in playing DB. For some reason it feels like there is absolutely no sense of accomplishment anymore. And yes I play for fun of course, but also like the sense of progress which is now gone.

Here are my main observations why:

  1. New crafting system - I kinda like to grind things and with the new crafting system, I totally lost interest in crafting anything, knowing that the costs of crafting will go down at some point. Perhaps the whole crafting system will be scrapped, who knows. I feel like saving my credits for the upcoming events or just wait for a major update of the crafting system and do it later. Not sure how you guys do this, but I used to save up some credits lets say up to 200k/300k and then enjoy one evening doing stuff, trading up, etc. etc. Simply having fun and poking RNGesus for some good trade ups. I loved the fact that I had to grind through other rarities. Sometimes I kept some of the silver or even gold rarity cards simply because I liked them. This is no longer viable which makes me kind of sad. The prices are beyond ridiculous. Even though SD confirmed that there will be 20 % cost reduction it still feels too much. And majority of the vets have a good stash of various rarities which does not make any sense to reprocess to crafting material with the current price system.

  2. Ranked, competitive scene - I also have to say I am no longer into pro-gaming thus I am just a casual pub player. I’m sure DB would gain popularity if the competitive scene got more attention and ranked would work as intended. Increasing credit income won’t necessarily attract more players playing ranked. Despite the game is in beta I have a feeling more could be done in order to support competitive scene. Also waiting dozens of minutes to jump in a match is way too much. I’ve played counterstrike since 2002. That game was not even in beta, it was just a half life mod yet it had huge competitive scene. I think it is possible, just different approach needs to be taken. Supporting the community with their own servers would definitely help. Dunno why is it such a big deal here. The whole matchmaking system in ranked is a joke…still…Also something like battle recorder or HLTV if you like would be a nice addition to the competitive scene. I know we have the spectator mode but still. Its got limited slots. I like the DBNation, but it feels like its not as huge as it was before. Many vets stopped playing the game and switched to other games like Overwatch. Yeah dats Capt. obvious there.

  3. Balance issues - again inb4, the current matchmaker is a joke. Dunno what is the exact algorithm, but hiding levels in lobby does not seem to work. SD could actually reveal what is the formula of the current shuffle before the map loads. There should be more factors included such as XP per min, win/loss, most played mercs, most earned XP in terms of support/combat/objective and dont kill me but maybe even overall K/D. Majority of my games are stomp, no matter what team I am on. Kinda got used to it lol. In my opinion the final shuffle of the players should take when the map loads, seconds before start of the pub match. Not in lobby. Many people still leave before the map loads. Another issue is players leaving throughout the match. There is very few occasions where I see players manually changing teams in order to balance things out. But I guess its just a matter of the community which does not like to do that. I can imagine why. Daily bonuses etc. Pub players are usually going for their daily bonuses and missions … which I quite understand.

  4. Gun/Merc balance - I like the latest approach that SD took in order to balance stuff in the game. I like the recent burst rifle nerf despite I love using them. I just want that SD won’t make the balance completely flat. That would kill the diversity which we currently have with the selection of weapons. No matter if its a burst, full auto, sub machine or bolt action rifle it should have its advantages and disadvantages. Perhaps few tweaks would help on guns like Dreis or Timik. They seem to be utterly underused and underrated. Some of the pistols also feel crap, like DE for instance. Man its a desert eagle.

  5. Events - they are fun. Sometimes they feel like endless grind and RNG is skyrocketing but still I kinda like em. I have already spent real cash on this and was quite disappointed with the last Obsidian deal. Until the last moment it was not clear how the obsidian loadout will be selected. Is it going to be a predefined one? or a random roll 1/9? This was not very clear. The only thing we knew was that its going to be the cuplrit merc. Therefore I was paying 11 EUR for a card (not really considering aimee as that is just 50k of credits which are ez to obtain) and I didn’t know what is it going to be. Paying customers should have full disclosure of all details in advance so that they can decide whether to buy or not. I think at this point this was raised and the community manager gave out inaccurate information. Later on apologized. This should not really happen.

  6. Maps - love the new maps, but hate execution ^^ thus nothing new for me. Love the new map design, the new locations, textures…such a good work, but focus on a wrong game mode. I play DB for objective / SW! That is the core and I am sure majority of you will agree. We need moar. Priority for SD is very clear. Focus on your core game mode. This is what DB is about at the end of the day. Bring more maps into your core game mode. Don’t spend time pimping the existing maps with new textures etc. Do it later. Just like wargaming does with world of tanks. They made all the maps first and now they are slowly redesigning them, pimping their textures and even layout. Prioritize! I figured you are not such a huge team working on DB.

I can’t really think of other points, many of them have been already raised I know. This community, at least on forums is not bad, there are many good posts with great ideas. Implement them, some of them are " just do it " things.

I’m not giving up on DB, but I guess just taking a break and wait what happens. Happy to hear your thoughts comments and criticism^^

Again, the overused excuse “BUT IT’S IN BETA” tries to justify it’s incompleteness and lack of end game content.

There are only dozen of SD employees working on DB? If it’s true, then it’s still more people than TF2’s 1 or 2 employees.

nice post

This is what I don’t understand about the new Obj/SW map that we tested a few times. Why wasn’t it included permanently, at least from some point after the tests? Pretty sure most of us would prefer getting a new map much earlier even if it’s not textured and subject to changes.

(deftMoon) #5

have you seen the steam charts and dirty bomb’s player number? its has been decreasing drastically and there is a clear reason for that. http://steamcharts.com/app/333930 The recent average number of players is 2113. Less that 2200. SD has wasted too much of their time and out time. Which leads to this… Not sure if they can recover. Its getting into a “too late” stage. Even though they have recently decided to change their focus to a slightly better plan, its too late. They took too long and they still take too long. Brink shouldve been enough.

Either this or its the usual dip every game (and general consuming) gets in the hot summer months.

(Dysfnal) #7

@TheStrangerous and look at how incredibly frequently TF2 is updated, what!?! Twice a year! That’s incredible!

I agree with you on many things, but there are still things that need to be addressed.

1. I agree with you 100%. However, from what we have seen from the developers, crafting is not going anytime soon. We may see some changes here and there but crafting is here to stay. Also, credit prices are too high. “It’s cheaper in the long run” -I don’t give a flying fuck. Sure, it may be cheaper if you only use leads. But let’s be real here; no one really does that.

2. Ranked is insanely fun and exhilarating especially when you are with friends and/or people who know how to play the game. Yes, having increased credits won’t attract people. So, do what Overwatch did: you get a currency based on your rank with which you buy badass skins (no, not cobalts). Don’t give us trinkets. Those are tiny; you don’t see them, nor can anyone else unless they are spectating you. Make it an “in your face” thing like skins.

3. Balance is an issue in pretty much every game. I quote @Amerika saying “Balance is an illusion.” However, with the new Casual Match Making system coming Soon™, it will allow for better ‘balance,’ as in, new players will play against new players, skilled players will play against other players with a similar skill level.

4. Gun balance is decent for the most part. SD did a good job with balancing the guns (especially with the latest patch). Sure, there are some guns that need tweaking and adjusting (like making the Timik more rewarding, as it is too similar to the M4A1), but they are mostly fine.

5. Events should be in favor of the entire community and not just a small portion (Proxy vs Stoker vs Fletcher vs Vasilli). I mean, come on, not everyone who bought it wanted a Proxy card. I agree that it was completely up to the player, but still… you get what I’m trying to say. You should try to please as many people as you can. There will always be those who are never pleased. I also know of a few people who got the exact same Culprit and Obsidian cards for Proxy cough @Sovrakha cough In any case, my Proxy card will rarely be touched.

6. Here is where I slightly disagree with you. I agree that maps are indeed important to the core gameplay, but I do not agree that their first priority is to make new maps. I feel they should focus on balancing the maps properly. There are places across all maps that need tweaking (3rd obj Trainyard, 1st obj Bridge, etc.). I’m still looking forward to Dockyard though.

All in all, I love Dirty Bomb thoroughly and will stick with it til the day it dies. I feel SD needs to forget about the players they lost and focus on keeping the players and veterans playing now as well as attracting new players. This game has enormous potential, I want to see it at it’s peak. I believe in you SD.

@stayfreshshoe pass on my message if you see this.

@TheStrangerous valve has over 330 employees compared to SD’s 75… and DB is not an mmo, so what exactly is end game content for a team based shooter?

@FalC_16 I am really not trying to sound rude so sorry If I do, but have you not caught up with the last updates that SD has been putting out? They said that they are shifting their focus back to SW/OBJ, but I can easily see why they focused on working out the execution maps first, they are much smaller and are so much easier to test things out/make, but part of redoing the existing maps is improving game performance, as well as fixing bugs and removing exploits; not just making the maps pretty.

On the balance issues, that should be improved with the new matchmaking system, and all of the things you mention on what should be in the matchmaking system… well are going to be for the most part. Leaver penalties will also be implemented with the new matchmaking system, but who knows if that will help much, I just hope there is a decent rejoin system if you dc.

On gun balance, the dreiss and timik are actually really good. I mean, you are not going to get the same range on a timik as you can with the aug-a3(my brain is derping and I forgot the in game name), but it works great for medium to short range, I use it on thunder with actually a lot of success. The dreiss can do a whole lot of damage too, it is a just a weapon that you really have to get used to. I mean you can pretty much two shot the lower hp mercs if you can get headshots, I just feel llike the burst rifles are used as much as they are because they are still very good. They still have a very tight grouping despite the fact that burst fire is in reality, really difficult to control. (i know talking about realism in this game is silly, but its just a thought.) The pistols are now actually amazing. get headshots with the deagle, S&w or the .357 and you will take out lower health mercs quick. Though I definitely agree that the sounds are uh… off to say the least. Which is strange because back in the released alpha footage, they had a proper sounding deagle.

And wait, if 50k for a merc are “ez to obtain.” then why are the crafting prices “beyond ridiculous.” I know this is an opinion a lot of people do not like, but I feel like rare cards should be well rare. What’s the point of having a cobalt if it is just really common? The other thing is that now it is so much easier just to make cards, you don’t need x amount of a certain rarity to make the next one up. You can just make whatever card you want. I actually just use irons and sometimes bronze cards on the mercs I don’t play often.

@deftMoon yes, there has been a really drastic dropoff in CCU, but there has also been a steady increase of owners/total audience. There is a whole lot more to analytics rather than just looking at numbers. Overwatch has their summer event going on right now, and siege just released their latest dlc so I am sure people who play those games as well are well playing them. I think it is going to take a big content release to really get the ccu numbers back up though. The last big spike was during the ReV event, so I figure if they release Turtle and Dockyard at the same time and maybe do an event? That would get the numbers really back up. Plus with that release, and with all of the bug fixes that come before it, that means that the game should be in a pretty good state to release. Most of the reviews on steam are pretty positive already anyways, but then bringing an ad campaign from both SD and Nexon will definitely help.

also if you want to look at graphs and numbers:

Hi Guys thanks for your positive responses and some constructive points you raised. I certainly hope that SD reads these posts and has some take away from it.

@aminuseternal totally agree, I actually really appreciate that SD took their time to rethink their strategy and even publicly apologized for their missteps. Not many game developers do that.

@Szakalot thx man :wink:

(LifeupOmega) #11

You’re an idiot who looks at daily peak players and not unique-over-time. Stop this stupid fear-mongering and use your brain.

(Tanker_Ray) #12

Nice article.

Though whatever DB’s current status opinions people leave in this forum,

I will be forever with this game whether it sinks, or rises.

Nice loadout, don’t need 2 of em.

Yet all I wanted was a single KE12 from either card, and I got H11 and H52 for my obsidian/culprit :expressionless:
