My thoughts on balancing snipers

(pinny0101) #1

So I in my other thread earlier I asked you guys how to counter snipers, and you guys basically just said to use abilities on them, snipe better than them, and 2v1 them. Also redeye was said, which I think is good, but then you have to figure out how to counter redeye, he’s a sniper too. I really just think all you would have to do to balance snipers is give sniper rifles exteme aimpunch. I have found most of my problems with snipers is when I outlplay them by sneaking around and stuff, but then they just 180 bodyshot me and I’m dead, nothing I can do to kill them unless I’m playing a specific character or they miss. I think giving a lot of aimpunch to snipers would fix this, you get close to them, and start firing, they can’t just 180 shoot you, what do you guys think? Maybe just give them like increased aimpunch the closer they are, so some guy doing 2 damage across the map doesn’t mess up long range snipes, but you cant instakill someone who flanked you.

Honestly dealing with Snipers comes down to a few things

Sightlines, Flank Routes, and Aim

You can’t really balance aim too much to be honest, that is dependent on the player, so you have to be sure for every sightline there is a fair flank route one can use to get behind the Sniper.

Well that’s the thing, flanking doesn’t do much, they just shoot you

Then don’t flank them from an angle they expect…like holy hell.

Lower body shot damage and a higher headshot multiplier for bolt actions. Some numbers, @x3onn made similar suggestions [url=“http://forums.dirtybomb.com/discussion/36070/merc-and-weapon-balancing-ideas”]here.

No one wants more aim punch in the game. In the situation you described the flanking player has to make a mistake to not get that kill IMO. Hitting a scoped headshot while under fire from behind in CQB isn’t a balance issue. The killing and damage potential with body shots from any range probably is.

Some maps don’t have that many flanking options, though. One or two competent snipers can totally shutdown attackers on Chapel’s main road since you always have to cross their line of sight no matter which route you want to take (road, office, back alley).

There is only part of Chapel that you can not flank from, that is the last part of the map on the balcony, anywhere else you should be able to without an issue.

…are you serious?

Alright, let me walk you through Chapel as an Attacker.

So, you have a Sniper on the balcony above the EV, his view is blocked to his right, so go to your left, toward the shed, then ads and mow his ass down.

He’s by the MG or toward the back of the street, take the stairs to your left and flank all the way around to reach him.

He’s overlooking the street from the second third MG placement, two story, well he only has a sightline on you from there, but he has to guess where you will go, so go into the two story building by the ammo box, or flank all the way around and sneak up on him from below.

I can go on and on, all these routes you can take to deal with him. If he still dominates you he’s being smart and paying attention, but if he spends too much time focusing on his flank he’s not actively sniping and keeping your team pinned.

people saying you gotta flank a sniper have to realise snipers have quick eye and will just pull of a cod qs

Yeah, like I have flanked snipers before, but once I start shooting they just turn and quickscope me, that’s why I’m saying maybe give them high aimpunch at close range, so they can’t just quickscope super easy.

Seems like the ‘problem’ is that they are just better than you. I guarantee a player of equal skill using a sniper will lose to you when you challenge them at the proper range with an SMG/AR. If you’re giving them enough time to get a shot off, drop their gun, raise their secondary and finish you off then you just need to aim better. Sorry dude
