Before this game came out, i was excited at the possibility for my and my friends to get away from the monotony of COD, it seemed like brink was going to be that fresh breath of air. The previews and gameplay trailers were incredibly alluring, and I was sold on the “Airport S.M.A.R.T preview”.
However, when I got this game on the Xbox 360, I was overwhelmed, confused, and slightly disappointed. The pristine graphics, were swapped for Cartoony, ps2 graphics, (Look at the Airport S.M.A.R.T preview, then go play the map terminal, and tell me theres not a big difference) clunky objective outlines, and at distances, characters seem like they become 2d sprites moving Super nintendo mario style through the background. But all of this is visual, and personal preference, what about the GAMEPLAY?
Once I shed the call of duty approach to the game, and started actually using the S.M.A.R.T system, the game became more what I initially anticipated. I learned to actually use the objective wheel, and soon after I was head over heels in love with brink, and to this day I cannot stop playing this game. However, after many hours of play there are still a few shortcomings I find in brink. Ones that many of you can relate to.
One being the presence of bots in multiplayer mode. Brink prides itself in being Unique. Its unique to have a multiplayer game to start with a team full of bots, but unique=/= good idea. I didn’t want to play multibot mode, and i f Iwanted to shoot A.I, well theres the campaign mode for that. Why did they do this? Im not asking for a reply from the devs but can someone help me understand the reasoning for Single player mode and online mode being nearly identical? Minus the fact that the bots have much better aim and you may have to deal with lag in multiplayer mode?
Secondly is the challenge mode. When I first saw the home screen, and then read challenge mode my heart jumped with excitement. But that was soon followed by disappointment as i saw only 4 different challenges. There are so many different things to unlock in this game, and with only 4 different challenges at 3 different difficulties I felt as though this was done in simple laze, and felt that challenge mode had much more potential. I feel as though there should be many more challenges, ones that focus on each specific objective, class, weapon ect.
However, despite all of its shortomings, I believe Brink is on the brink of becoming a great game. I don’t know what tomfoolery if any went down during that year of pushback time, but there are big glaring problems in the game that should have been noticed. Brink is still an enjoyable game to me and to many others out there. I just hope that brink lives up to the potential we all know it has.
