multiple crossing points for patch -- can't clip

(fraco) #1

hi all,

“multiple crossing points for patch – can’t clip” is the warning/error q3map2 gives me when making a valley (gensurf terrain) with a fog brush in there.

What does it mean? I have a feeling it may account for the sparkles i see on the edges between terrain and fog.

Is this so? Any way to fix it?

some screenies: fog, terrain and sparkles

outside of the fog, no sparkles

thnx guys

I’m not sure about the sparklies, but I do know that if you get a warning, not an error, that means the compiler is letting you know of a possible problem.

You might try world fog as a test to see if you get the warning and sparklies still.

The sparklies are caused by the same thing that causes black seams on skybox edges. The fog texture is getting clamped to black at the extremes.

The multiple-patch-crossing warning is because you have a complex piece of patch geometry that is crossed by the surface of the fog multiple times. Simplify your geometry to fix it.

ok, you got me there. “fog textures get clamped to black”. been pondering that sentence for a while  I’m afraid it doesn’t mean much to me.

What does that mean. How could I fix this?

thnx

It’s not a problem that you can address. See here for an explanation why. The black/white dots in fog are caused by the same problem that causes black seams in skybox images.

k thnx Ydnar,

sounds like a good excuse to upgrade my gf2 to a gf4 and forget about the entire issue

In case I haven’t already made this abundantly clear, upgrading your hardware will not address the issue.

If anything, recent Detonator drivers are more conformant to the OpenGL spec, and therefore will have black seams on the skybox images.
