Multiplayer, and Grid Based Loadouts, needing input here

(watsyurdeal) #1

So, I am needing some advice here in regards to grid based inventories.

If you need an idea of what I am talking about, here

To put it bluntly, I don’t want to deal a class based shooter cause I feel that’s far too restrictive. Rather instead, I want to something more of customize your loadout deal. You pick what weapons, ammo, gadgets, etc you wanna use, allowing you to make different setups based on what role your team needs you to fill.

I realize it is possible for someone to have two assault rifles or something like that, but the way I am balancing my guns, I feel like that won’t be as much of a problem. As I could add a number of things to counter that, such as cash system, where you can only have $1000 dollars worth of gear in your loadout, or whatever.

I just want to know what you guys think, especially since I’m using Dirty Bomb’s gun play as my basis.

Ah poop, I totally misunderstood your thread at first. My bad.

A grid system would be kind of hard to balance IMO. Yet it’s something that we have not seen on any MMOFPS yet if I remember correctly. It COULD work if you find an intelligent way to incoporate it, as well as a way to make sure that people just won’t stack the best weapons dumbly.

The grid has a user interface issue though : some people won’t know how to exploit the grid as much as they should, and it can be seen as a burden. If I were a guy who designed a video game, I wouldn’t use a grid based loadout.

That’s the idea…I’m trying to get more ideas and fine tune them

I think I understand what you’re getting at. You want to design a system that allows players to have an inventory with limited slots so that they have to make meaningful decisions on what they take with them while also giving a bit of freedom to change while they are playing?

For example, you want to be able to switch between an M4 and an LMG if a player takes those with them but it might cost them space for more options with secondary types or grenades or things like that?

EXACTLY

This way there’s no real best or worst loadout, it’s a matter of what you’re willing to give up vs what you want to accomplish.

I like that concept. It’s a bit like having loadouts in CoD which kind of defines what “class” you play. But instead having having slots where you just fill in the slot with the ability you can balance abilities against each other by making some “bigger” in the grid compared to others. Which would then mean you could take something that is a heavy hitter but at the cost of other options. So it’s similar but different and it gives players the opportunity to make a meaningful choice while also giving you a balance dial to use that isn’t gameplay related.

When I have the time I’ll send you a list of weapons and gadgets I’m looking at later, feedback is always appreaciated

Add me on Steam if you want. steamcommunity.com/id/amerika

inb4 you get a shit ton of invites XD

Hey sorry I’m at work for a few hours this morning, I’ll read into this properly when I get home.

(Amerika) #13

Haha, that already happens just from playing on server. It confuses me a bit how somebody can say nothing to another person but then go search for them and add them to friends. Also, I believe I am literally the first thing that pops up if you search for Amerika on Steam so I’m not too hard to find!

And I don’t mind as long as I know the person somewhat and most on the forums qualify.

(blisteringOwlNest) #14

A game that already does this is called warside. Has exactly what your describing.

(brennanfreak) #15

Are you trying to get me to spend 20 minutes organizing my inventory? because that’s what I did in RE4 and Deus ex.

(Verticules) #16

Heroes and Generals’ has an easy method for its inventory that is quick and straightforward. I suggest checking it out. The upgrade system is a different story.

(Sir_Slam) #17

Please. For the love of all that’s holy.

Have some kind of automatic sorting mechanism. When my inventory looks like my room/relationships/life in general I cry myself to sleep that night.

The idea itself is fine, but how does one switch weapons? Do they have to pull up the inventory RE style or is there a quick switch function?
