moving train

(Lock Ness Monster) #1

i saw the beta sub way level and i thought WOW!!! that train is cool, so i was wanting to learn how to make one. I found some tutorials for RTCW but i dont know what all to change to make it work in ET, i found that a few of the things r not fully compatible from RTCW, does anyone know some good tutorials completely for ET or some practice maps that go in good deatil with that stuff. Once i get good with this, i think u might like that map im thinking up

calm down man, take it easy, here  , take that, should calm u down some, thanks for the tutorials ill start right a way.

By the way, y u so pissed?

(Lock Ness Monster) #4

ok, i looked at the things, i need to know more then just scripting and the spline thingsys dont i, like dont i need to know all the key names to, thats y i was asking for a testmap on some site that anyone might know about, thats how i figured out how to make everything i got but the elevator which came from muzzle (thanks again man), but test maps or video tutorials really have helped me, i was so shocked when i made a draw bridge lol. does anyone know some good tuorials like that for moving objects that goes alone with ET fully and not RTCW?

(Lock Ness Monster) #5

hope someone answers soon, this might be the last week i have internet for a bit, i want a train that is like the one on the Subway, sort of, it dont go around over and over, just once, i dont know what to set the keys to or what i need. I need it to go fast to and i dont know what exactly to put in a script after i make it since ive never done this before. someone help me or give me a good ET tutorials, the ones on RTCW arnt completely like it and i run into problems, hope someone helps me with this. ill buy u a cold one if u do

(ausman) #6

how ya going, it is I who made that subway map. There is a good tutorial by Grizzlybear that I followed on how to do the looping trains, have a look here http://www.zen20443.zen.co.uk/mp_script_mover.htm . This is based on RtCW but still works fine. If you don’t want the mover to loop around again in the script remove this line at the end of the flightpath

trigger plane flightpath //repeat plane flightpath part of the script

. Also I used splines instead of path corners and hence if u do the same u need to use the followspline script conventions for instead of gotomarker convention, For more on that look in the LDR.

Im glad to meet u, the subway is at this moment one of my favorite maps, i have to say a job well done on it, its a good fight map lol, ill look at this tutorial now, i hope it helps me greatly, also 2 things i must ask, what is the difference in a spline and a path corner, and what is a LDR, ive heard alot about that but no one has told me what it means. Thanks again for the tutorial and it’s a privilge to meet a great map creator

(Lock Ness Monster) #8

ok, i got a problem, it doesnt want to move, ive gave the exact keys to my brushs and ive planted 6 path-corners instead of 4, is the spline things easier to use, cause i cant figure out, i will go ahead and tell u i am a newbie at this stuff, ive only figured out a few things by myself, ive had to ask everyone else what in teh crap does this mean and all lol. thanks for the tutorial though, i know it will help me, just got to figure out y it wont move.

LDR is for Level Designer Reference.

(Lock Ness Monster) #10

I got the basic train, but someone tell me, is it better for them to follow path_corners or the spline things, cause in the subway map i noticed splines was used, if they r better, does anyone know a good tutorial on spline mapping?, also, how do u make a train turn?

(ausman) #11

For trains the splines are definately better. When using splines your mover automatically follows the path and rotates the mover accordingly so that it so it faces the next spline, also with splines u have the advantage of using control points which allow the mover to more smoothly follow points inbetween splines.
As for a good spline tut, I haven’t seen any so far. I might write 1 up. If your looking to make your train turn just play with the line of the splines, have a look at how they did it with the tank in goldrush.map

(Lock Ness Monster) #12

i have been, i got one question, what r tehy control things that r purple, do u need them or what, cause if made multiple copies of my map since if screwed a good amount of my prototypes up :banghead: , so ill start to work with them, but before i do could u tell me about all that i need plz, sorry to be a bother

(Lock Ness Monster) #13

LOL, ok i started using the spline things and i got my train moving, but in a weird way. It wants to warp instead of moving normally and when it goes just a tad up hill, i instantly get gibbed, lol, can anyone tell me y?

(Lock Ness Monster) #14

plz someone, im most likely gonna lose access to the internet for awhile after tomorrow, plz someone tell me how to make the train go normally, all i have is main_splines and i noticed that in teh goldrush map there r spline controls, can someoen tell me what those are and if i need them or not, plz osmeon help me before tomorrow

(WeblionX) #15

If you look at the LDR, I believe it mentions the info_spline_controls. They are not needed except if you want to smooth out the movement. Make sure each spline is targeted at the next one in the line to prevent jumps.

(Lock Ness Monster) #16

ive got them like that, but i do think i have found the problem, how close do the spline_mains need to be put together, that might fix soem of it

(ausman) #17

it doesn’t really matter how close they are together. It is also you probably better that u start off without the control points until you’ve got your path down pat, then start playing around with them. A good tool to use with splines is the plot splines function located in radient under Plugins > bobtoolz > Plot splines, this will show u a white line of your splines path. If u press plot splines and the white line doesn’t interlink your splines that means that there is a problem somewhere with your splines.

(Lock Ness Monster) #18

sweet, i didnt know that, ill give it a whilr right away

(Lock Ness Monster) #19

ok, every one of my splines must have a problem cause i dont see a single white line, i probably did something wrong though, o well got any ideas lol?

(Lock Ness Monster) #20

I know this would be a pain and u dont have to do it, but i was having a hard time with elevators and muzzle made me a testmap that had one in it and know i can amek an elevator like its nothing, could u or anyone make me a small test map that would teach me how to make things move and turn like ur train. You dont have to but seeing a working example always helps me out more tehn anything, thanks if u do
