Mortars and spawn points

I think most people would agree that being able to directly panzer the opposing spawn from long distance (even from the other sides starting spawn) … though some people insist on designing their spawn points that way.

So then, why do people design spawn points that can be mortared directly from the other side’s spawn point? There is nothing that puts a damper on a map (IMO) quicker than never making it out of the spawn because there is only one exit which conveniently faces the opposing spawn. It takes all of a 3rd grade math level to time your mortar shots to coincide with the opening of the spawn door so that all those fresh respawns catch your mortar round coming right thru the door.

Think people, think. It’s not that hard

I’ve never come accross much spawnkilling in custom maps. Maybe it is because not many people know these custom maps. Maybe it is because their command maps are so confusing that even the big dynamite symbol doesn’t make any sense, maybe it is because more and more servers are putting heavy weapon restrictions in their configs. Whatever it is i can’t share your rant.

Then again I think spawn killing is perfectly legit gameplay. Plus you have 5 sec from the moment you spawn to get away from the spawn location. Of course getting away can be troublesome if you have that jerk that is always standing at the exit. But that’s why we have the shove options.

I think you’re confusing issues. I am certainly not against spawnkilling and totally agree that it’s part of the game. However, mappers need to put a little bit of thought into how easy they make it to spawn camp. There is a world of difference between working your way into the axis spawn on Fuel Dump with a panzer/satchel/flamer than being able to spawn and immediately send a mortar round into the axis spawn on [insert map name here].

A lot of problems could be very easily solved one of several of the following:

  1. Add over head cover
  2. Turn spawn point 90 or 270 degrees so that the exits don’t directly face the enemy
  3. Add additional exits w/o doors to facilitate a quick exit
  4. Make spawn points more open to facilitate a quick dispsersion

Also agreed that you have 3 seconds of invulnerability which is fine and dandy, however, when the spawn point exit is a small trap door at the end of a narrow ladder, that 3 seconds gets eaten up really fast or when you have the single door way which is contantly open and inviting mortar rounds, it’s easy to get jammed up behind people

Again, I am not against spawncamping … mappers just need to make it more challenging to get into a good camping position. Spawning and hitting +altfire isn’t my idea of challenging
