More atmospheric environments pls

Look at the artwork of Container City on the brink wiki. And compare it to the ingame version of the map.

The whole map was set up with a dark sky and a kinda stormy mood probably, yet ingame it’s as sunny as every map. Come on SD, do you even know how much you could tune the existing maps atmospherically? How about a decent rain and some random visual lightning and acoustic thunder effects on Container City? There is so much potential. I want more atmosphere.

That’s of course not the most important thing that needs to be changed, but really, I want to feel like I am on the ocean. The lightning of Container City in no way reflects the weather in the intro. Add rain, add storm, add thunder, add seagull sounds (basically add seagulls, lol).

it was made for colorful to take off the depressing load for the game. before in all the old screenies all the maps where extremely dark, so much so the asses a flashlight attachment (for obvious reasons it didnt make it in the game) and there was rain and wetness and a much more dark game looked to be ensuing. id like that alot more, as long as this stupid highlight feature could be taken off and replaced with an icon above the objective, i dont need to see things through walls just give me a icon and how far things are id be alot happier.

but yeah + not 1 but 2

oh BTW your site is in German and if i couldn’t have a translator on i would be in trouble  do you use a translator or do you know English?

(Qbix) #4

Should be kinda common nowadays for people to speak a bit english. Except of course for Russians and French. :stroggbanana:

(BiigDaddyDellta) #5

Lol, do you think the whole ocean is stormy and has seagulls? Seagulls would have been killed and eaten on the ark and it’s also in the pacific which doesn’t really have anything living in the top layers of its “atmosphere” except durring the night of certain seasons.

But if you are hungry there’s always fresh fruit on resort… and also ice in the buckets at the bars!

^This post makes me sound like a Troll, sorry.

Funny thing is, my fellow german guy here mentioned CC as not being atmospheric enough. I don’t know, whenever I have the chance to play CC I choose it. Server list; CC, Map vote; CC. Its definitely the best looking Map and also the most fun to play one. Except if you get stuck at sec spawn or other choke points.

Resort is definitely the most ugly map, followed by Aquarium, even though I like to play them. The textures and the lighting are boring but the architecture itself is nice, just not very detailed. CC on the other hand is quite detailed, even though the textures became very muddy when you take a closer look at them.

Shipyard and Reactor are also quite good looking and sec tower would be nice too if there werent these fps problems. Refuel is ok, but it isn’t particular good looking. Terminal has some good looking spots too. But overall CC is the Map that defines Brink. If someone says Brink I think Container City and not Resort.

I play with some people who have the exact opposite view. Lol I like all the maps for the most part. Really think its awesome though how there is so much vairety between maps, some run down areas, others are close to pristine, and some still looking nice but wearing down. Has a little bit of everything and you cant help but fall in love with one enviroment or another.

Would def love to see more dynamic enviroments, like maybe 2-3 diff looks per map to give them all a diff feel. Maybe some night time or stormy weather for the “nice day” maps and for darker maps like Sec Tow have a day time or sunrise/sunset view. Every little variable helps break up the repetivness and keep the maps feeling fresh.

I think the perfect map to have stormy rainy night would be Security tower in the last leg of map when escorting escort to escape out the yard.

This is just an idea off the top of my head.

What would you think of possibly having every map with the two known “weathers” the sunny day and the moody storm, but all the already known maps wouldnt change. Instead have the weather reflecting an alternate version of each level where the maps are played in reverse and objctives changing sides. Kinda like a second campaign with a diff story either as a sequel or prequel. Just something I wanted to get out there that dawned on me.

(tokamak) #11

I’d take that over the orange colorise filter it has now.

(DarkangelUK) #12

A lot of engine devs like to show day and night cycles in their tech demos, yet you rarely see any MP games actually make use of it. it’d be cool to play a map in day or night just to even mix things up a little. We also know idtech4 does rain/fog etc as they used it in ETQW… dynamic weather would be awesome.

(V1cK_dB) #13

Yeah I agree with that completely. Although the environments are like 10th on my list of things to fix. Spread/damage being #1 and party lobby for console being #2.

(Darksider) #14

Some devs do it, I have notice people throw a bitch storm complaining about lag in maps with dynamic weather case in point TF2 a couple of maps with rain in them. Man, I remember how many people were griping about the maps being so laggy due to the rain particles, etc. But ultimately Valve added in a command to turn the weather off and on at your pleasing.

(.FROST.) #15

Since Brink is a very stylized game it wouldn’t make sense to add weather and a day and night cycle.
My opinion is that SD wanted to give everything(Characters, Maps) a certain look and mood wich shouldn’t be changed by the player or some dynamic randomness. They wanted to convey a certain mood with every map. Weather and day and night cycles would simply destroy the core intention they have with this game.

Explanation:
Shipyard and CC should show all the rustyness of the guest pelgos. Thats best done with the kind of lighting they used. Sec Tower should look like a dark, massive fortress it wouldn’t make sense to play it at bright daylight. And it allready looks rainy enough for me, I don’t need particles, especially on this frame abusing map. Refuel could be in daylight but again, it wouldn’t make much sense. I mean its the end of the story so far. It should end when the day ends. Another contra point is that you would need dynamic, weather and daytime dependent intro and outro videos.

Indoor maps like Aquarium, Resort, and Terminal wouldn’t benefit much from dynamic weather and daytimes anyways. And they are allready dark enough at daytime(yeah, Resort isn’t at daytime, I know). And Reactor also looks best with the lighting it has. The yellow ground and the white walls and vehicles are a welcome relief from the dark indoor maps and the rusty guest pelgo maps. And aside from that its partly an indoor map too.

(BiigDaddyDellta) #16

It would be cool even if the map just randomly changed day and night once a match, like in between objective or cutscenes.

Funny to see this comming from you since you defended female characters to the death… This would be 1000x more doable and makes more sense in the overall scheme of things… Dont see why adding an alt version of the level would ruin the original versions seen in the campaign…

Also you act as if the sun is the only light source in the game, all places on the Ark have lighting and is already there for the most part, just make it dark/darker and lets see all these lights and how every thing looks from another point of view. And on the other side of it many “indoor” maps have plenty of hints that its daytime like the sun comming through the water in aquarium, it would have a totally diff feel if it was dark and more lit up inside from artificial light over sunlight. And many of those ‘indoor’ maps have plenty of sun from windows and sky lights/open roofs so seeing them with the artificial lights and dark skys would give it a whole nother look…

I really think giving the current levels (including the known future DLC) a make over for diff weathers and time of day could really bring new life to whats already there. Not to mention we have no clue of future DLC after this first so if they did happen to not be planning any “all new” maps then this could be a very viable way to expand the game and keep it cost effective.

Oh and about Sec Tow, the dark def fits it well especially considering the mission and story, but wouldnt you want to see more of how it looks to those that have to pass through everyday, its a place thousands from the Ark pass through daily, I want to see it from their view as well. There wasnt always a war going on. I mean come on I want to see everything I can on the Ark and if I cant see it all would atleast love to see everything thats there from a diff perspective. Not really the dynamic changing weather/time of day, but just remakes of the current levels to show another side of them. They dont call things that are very different “night and day” for no reason…

(xBluntxForce) #18

I had always wondered why games didn’t go the old school pokemon route, and have weather the map was day or night depend on the time on the hosts xbox. So if you play during the day the maps are sunny and so forth.

(.FROST.) #19

Yeah, and you could set the begining of Terminator 2 in brought daylight, but wouldn’t that be a little crappy. The salceda camp scene on the other hand is so perfectly setup with this low evening sun, I can’t imagine any differen’t lighting.

And I don’t know why I can’t defend Fems for Brink whilst I discard dynamic weather and day and night cycles. Since there are a lot of tough girls out there in real life and entertainment franchise wich can kick butt as well. E.g. Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley, Vasquez, Lornette “Mace” Mason. They absolutely wouldn’t change the mood for the worse. Or give Brink an overall different tone in the wrong way. And it wasn’t an artistic decision to exclude fems, but a commercial one. Wheras the weather/day cycle thing is definitely an artistic one.

If they would have unlimited resources, they would have put fems in. I bet that.

(Mustang) #20

That is actually a pretty sick idea
The only downside is that a lot of people always play at the same time of day so to them it would be a waste
Perhaps we could have 3 hour days based on either the host or UTC
Then in one gaming session you get to try out all the different lighting and weather conditions
