Keep in mind that there are still players out there who are not interested in the new game titles out right now and hence find no need to upgrade their computers. So it is very important to make it run smooth even on old computers. Also people still complain about laggy maps to these days so the idea that most people have now up to date machines is a complete rubbish and a great excuse for developers/mappers.

The tank looks alright but you can save at least 41 000 vertices on that model and still make it look nice. Most players who will focus their sights on that tank will experience awful spike of lag and not to mention how much stress this will put on the game engine.

Here is a small example from me.

42 000 vertices less and looks relatively good. What I am trying to say is that too much focus is right now placed on adding details on the model itself than it should be.

but as is said in your topic i tried to do this model for another engine - normalmaps and such stuff…
and i have one diffrence - the chains are animated in my model :wink:
i ll add the LOD models - this will increase the performance a little bit :slight_smile:
we ll see - it s just a test for fun - if it works ok - if not, too…

it’s not an excuse, but what i’m trying to say, if u want ur map to be good looking, and have some extraordinary stuff, then… well, forget about optimising for 5+ years old computers, as it’s not worth it. the same thing goes regarding filesize. if u can stream hd videos, but u complain about 20 mb map that u download only once then there is something wrong.

what’s the point of using xreal for et? people will have to upgrade their pcs to play it.

Hehe - Personally I’m playing on a 10+ year old pc, and ET still runs nicely, though it doesn’t have the highest details in multi player mode :frowning:

I guess it doesn’t really matter how nice maps are made, it’s how people tweak their settings

Really? How many times have you used the similar sentence “Most folks have now upgraded hardware, so we don’t have to worry so much about FPS”. I can recall myself saying that many times on S&M map projects and now i regret ever saying those. So I consider it as an excuse to forget about the older hardware users.

I did not mention anything about map file size or xreal. I don’t mind downloading a 20 mb size pk3, if the DL speed is alright. And to clear up the Xreal thing, I believe it’s going to divide the community into half. One pack will stay here and others will move on to Xreal. Meaning the new nice update will be also a small crash point for most of us. Perhaps slowly driving us to the end of ET. So I am not following the hype of Xreal. It’s a nice idea but not for me.

That of course does not mean I am a hater of updates so don’t start flaming me or i’l fire my Dark Matter Cannon on all of you. :oppressor:

well i appriciate any help i can get … in basics its this …

im working on a mod , which weaponry actually is allready done , so all i have to do is to import into ET … well this all works since its just an md3 thing , replace everthing etc … however i want to have additional weaponry , eg the mines replaced with something else and some various other things …

basicly if i can mod the handgun into something totally different i would be happy … bear in mind that i have to edit existing material so i need the anims to work …

anyone got an idea on that ? …

to get futher on topic … anyone spare me a manual editing md3 ?

Your best bet is to import an md3 file and then look at how its structured and then try to recreate the same structure. That’s how I figured out how to model and compile weapons for ET/TC:E since there are no tutorials for it.

Although I am making a weapons tutorial for TC:E, I may or may not create a ET spinoff of it (but at this point it doesn’t look likely).
