model texture problem

i have recently had my PC wiped and reinstaled radient

i tried to put in the crate model but it didnt recognise the path. so i idited my basepath in preferces to
C:/Program Files/Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory/etmain/

then i took the mapobjects folder out of pak0 and pasted it over the one in etmain
i then inseted a gamemodel went into the model/mapobjects and found the crate model and opened it. this just left a little box where the model should be

so i checkd the model path and it was
C:/Program Files/Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory/etmain/models/mapobjects/cmarker/cmarker_crates.md3
so i shortened it to
models/mapobjects/cmarker/cmarker_crates.md3

this made the model apear without the texture whitch was what i had expected

i then put in the key “skin” and put the path stating from model/ to the skin i wanted to use but it still apeared blank

is there something i am setting up wrong? or what

n/m guys i figured it out, i was lookign under the wrong name i had to look under menzel… got it :smiley:

AFAIK spaces in the path can cause such problems. Try a path like C:\ET…

ok still no luck, i madea instaaion deirect in the C drive to avoid the space in “prgram files” and called it ET

so here is a pick plz help someone this is realy anoying me

You need to extract more folders, not only the models folder. The .skin file needs shaders (you see the the “shader not found” on your image), and the shader might need textures outside the models directory. You should be fine when you extract the complete pak0.pk3 into your ET mapping directory.

this is realy starting to **** me off

i extracted the files u said and the only differece is that the skni file directory was level with the skin key

but when i then make a bsp of that map in C:/ET/maps then run that copy of ET

/set g_gametype 2
/devmap crate

then it starts to load then says connot find crate.bsp

ok, pretty shure that it wouldnt be able to find the bsp if it was on sv_pure

got a question that may help, should the skin apear on the model in the editor after i change the skin key? cos if it should then it doesnt

ok reinstalled everything et rtcw the editor everything

ET = C/et
rtcw = C/rtcw

the editor was installed and informed where all the directories were

got the model from the mapobjects folder it apeared with the shader not found
gave it the key “skin” then the same path as last time in the editor the model still had the no shader found

compiled the map
sv_pure 0
set g_gametype 2
devmap test

ran it and there was no model there, what i want to know it, would the model have the black and yelow missing shader on it ordo models apear invisble?

as it is put into the map it goes in on the map run not the compile so do i have to actuly somehow spawn it into the map on startup (just a thought)

They just stay invisible. I think thats because the are made with referenced materialnames and not predefined texturemaps. And the .skin file connects the materialnames with the images. So if you define a .skin with images that are not present, you get the orange/black squares.

EDIT: But the worst problem, you have, is that you try to map the axis_cflag.skin on the crates. The crates do not have any faces referenced with the materials, defined in the .skin.
Better try models/mapobjects/cmarker/axis_crates.skin. That should make you happy.

In your case it’s ok that you see the “shader not found” on the models in Radiant. I suggest you try one of the LDR’s sample maps (for example Allies Construction) and see how it’s done there.

thankx gnat but that is the model i am using
i think it is there its just got no textures on the surfaces so you cant see it, and obviously it doesent clip so i cant prove that it is there by moving through it

k shaderman ill look in a LDR map, i looked at goldrush but that was set up like mine a tink, ill double check

when i rad the ldr map the crates apeared so this got me thinkin, my instalation must not be at fault so my reinstalling it has done something

i had not been trying to actuly get the model to do anything just be there, a misc_gamemodel is made to actulay do something in the game so that is probably why it is not doing anything, and as i am just leaving it here it is not being spawned as any group or set up so it does not apear

the tanks are misc_gamemodels and they need spawning right?

give the gamemodel a targetname (key: targetname , value: whateveryoulike) and you will be a happy person again :wink:

i am asuming that the targetname is the name the game uses to place the model in the level

Glad it worked.
My comment is about another entity: team_CTF_blueflag/redflag.
Just in case a mapper reads this who is unaware of the problem with this particular entity. You cannot use both “Scriptname” and “Targetname” on a team_CTF_blueflag/redflag. Only scriptname.
If you use both, the model will not show up in game.
This has been noted before, by Drakir for example but also other mappers in this forum.
I’m just repeating this vital info.
I end with a quote from a Niel Young song: “Keep on mapping in the free world!”
