[MOD] ETrun

(amd3200) #1

Hello,

I would like to introduce ETrun.

What is it?

ETrun is a Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory timerun mod.
The goal of a timerun is to get from the start of the map to the end as fast as possible.

How does it work?

ETrun has 3 different physics:

[ul]
[li]Vanilla (VET)[/li][li]Vanilla Quake 3 (VQ3)[/li][li]Advanced Physics (AP)[/li][/ul]
It’s heavily based on competition between players, your goal is to get the best times as possible and to compete with your friends.

What does it look like?

Compatibility

It’s compatible and tested with ET 2.60b and ET: Legacy.

Sounds nice.
Isn’t here ETJump mod? Wouldn’t it be better to make one mod?

This mod is the only reason I still play W:ET. It’s really fun and if you need help getting started the community is sure to help you out.
You can also use commands to draw your speed in the middle of your screen and cgaz to help you learn faster.

Here are the steps to set up an account so your times are saved: http://timeruns.net/start/

The only real “downside” for new players is that the maps are bundled into map packs, so in the beginning you might be waiting around while you download a 100mb map pack (on the plus side each pack contains around 100 maps)

This can be avoided by downloading them from the site: http://timeruns.net/downloads/

There is also another downside, some of the packs break some maps/textures in some cases. For example after downloading one I couldn’t see anything while viewing oasis and goldrush demos.

There is little pk3 to fix this, you should put it in etmain/

IMO it’s sad, because all (?) of realistic mods (e.g. east front or etxreal) are dead and ppl creating more and more tj mods… W:ET is a free and open source multiplayer first-person shooter video game set during World War II. But this is not et but a kind of “jumping game”. Weapons are also rather not necessary in it anymore…
That’s just my opinion, my point of view, and didn’t want to offend anyone. Peace.

Well as you said it’s an opensource game so if somebody really wanted to make a realistic mod they could. So I guess the interest for it isn’t that high.

Well, there’s just two TJ mods and I highly doubt there will be any more. ETJump focuses on trickjumping in regular ET physics. ETrun focuses on racing on a variety of physics. I don’t see much point in combining them together.

I also believe ET physics are awesome and that one shouldn’t change them to make the game more “realistic” as we got plenty of such games already. A new regularly updated competitive mod would be nice, tho.

Why would you frag in a trickjump game?

(IRATA) #13

Is there a competition race mode for several connected players? All the vidz I’ve seen so far only show a single player jumping around. Might be fun to start a race with other players on the server …

(Mateos) #14

Hmm and there would be a problem if one “get in front”; But if you build a map and copy/paste the same thing say 3 times, and a timer allows players to move all at once, you could have 3 players running at once without problem

(Ninjadeer) #15

i think the videos have the option “hide other players” enabled so you dont get to see them, the whole thing is a big competition, you dont start at the same time but you do try to get a better time than others, an actual race would most likely be disappointing because you have to be very accurate with your strafing, turning and following the route that it requires multiple tries to set a good time

here is the ranking: http://timeruns.net/top/AP/

(IRATA) #16

That’s the point - I was thinking to let players start at same time. Collosion with other players might be switched off for a pure race and with enabled collision and weapons for the rat race (spawn at death location after 3 secs). Of course there is a need for a special map design. Jump tasks shouldn’t be too harsh or if they are - players have to climb ladders/use elevators to try again.

(stealth6) #17

Sounds a bit like deathrun. All the players start at the same time and have to complete a course, the difference is that there are a few players on the other team that can activate traps.

Sounds like it could be fun, although quite a large difference from the current system so I think it would be hard to get players interested. There were ideas floating around to limit the amount of time a player had to set a good time on a map in TJmod, but unfortunately that mod is no longer in development. Atm you can spend as much time as you want on a map which often leads to frame wars where players compete for times that are 0.008 seconds faster on popular maps.

It’s not that big of an issue though since the playerbase is limited, but definitely my biggest annoyance with the system.

(Ninjadeer) #18

there are trickjump maps with that idea in mind for regular trickjump, tjwar_a1 by matej and ihqrace for example
also there have been races on maps with original jumps in them several times but for AP it just seems like a bad idea in my opinion
