Minor Ranked AFK kick adjustment: Mercy period

(zykeroth) #1

I’m making a separate thread from the present Idle Penalties thread because I want to adress a specific scenario. I agree that the rules should be very much reinforced to maintain some sense of order in the matches in the game’s current state.

However, there’s this small nitpick I have with it: Should the AFK guy kicked in the beginning of the match really have no chance of redemption?

I’m talking about cases when the culprit had missed getting back in time just a little bit; give a time window of around 2 minutes when he can reconnect after getting AFK kicked. The match doesen’t necessarily have to be ruined into a 4v5 in these cases; they could still be won. No 2nd chances after getting AFK kicked again though.

Perhaps this could be applied midmatch aswell because if there’s an issue suddenly coming up, I’m very sure you’ve experienced people just saying “No” to pausing the game cos they don’t care.

The problem with this is that the amount of time between accepting the match in the queue (match won’t start without everyone doing this) and the time in the lobby to the beginning of the match is less than 2 minutes. If you accept a match and then fail to make it back in time despite knowing the game will be starting very soon, it is still your responsibility.

As for the notion of a 4v5 not being that big of a deal or a sure-fire loss/win, I’d question how many matches and seasons y’all have played in. It is very hard to recover from that if the game is even remotely balanced. But, again, whether or not a short amount of time with imbalanced players is going to make or break a match is irrelevant. A match should never have imbalanced players in the first place. Period.

I haven’t read your other thread, but honestly kicking an AFK in ranked is always a bad idea. It’s better to have a chance at rejoining a match instead of kicking them for good, and I’ve never seen one AFK player be kicked in all of the ranked matches I’ve played.
Being AFK for any amount of time in ranked isn’t good, and there’s no excusing someone who goes AFK in ranked. Yeah, sometimes life happens and we have to disappear for a minute, but that’s why first time punishments aren’t as bad as ones that follow. This statement is even coming from someone who’s had to leave ranked games due to real life issues.

Personally, i think the AFK kick should be removed entirely from ranked. AFKs will still have a penalty applied to their account for being absent for too long, but they could potentially lessen that penalty by joining back and helping their team. Of course none of them will get away with no penalty, but you’re right, if they can save it, then they don’t deserve as much of a penalty as someone who just gave up.

Pretty much my point; I’m just fearful that if we allow rejoining at any time of the match, there will be throwers coming back at the last second for the 10 points. There should be a rule like, if you’ve been absent for x amount of time that can pass before you’re not allowed to come back and get the 1st penalty .

Well the amount of reward you get could be tied to that penalty too. Like, if you were afk for too long, barely did anything after rejoining, or rejoined at the last second, no reward. Do a bit more, get a partial reward. Personally I think rank/rewards should be based on personal performance anyways, so this would basically be an extension of that.

Or the penalty should remove rewards. Like, be afk in a match for too long, you don’t get any rewards, and the length of your ban afterwards would be based on how long you were afk and how much you contributed to the team after, although this might not be a good enough reason to rejoin for some.
