Micro-transactions...?

ayyguamo,

So, I got in for the 2nd stress test thing-a-majig. Woo! Time to see if it’s decent.
Anyways, I read the email I got with the code, and I saw this…

“Limited Edition Crates”

Crate? Oh God… Are we gonna start another generic F2P? Useless cosmetics, or armor that has to be repaired constantly, and is extremely expensive?

(ToonBE) #2

Maybe first play the game and see what those crates are about. Just a little tip

Crates do not necessarily only provide cosmetics. They also give a set of 3 perks, a possibly different of main, secondary or melee weapon. Currently, armor does not have to be repaired, and I doubt any intentions of implementing such a system in the game.

(Nail) #4

in the over 2 years I’ve been involved there is no armor to repair

I certainly hope they remove the weapons from the cards and let us pick what we want to use. Perks I can deal with but weapons should be something we can choose.

(Nail) #6

weapons are likely to be merc dependent, no choosing

(Amerika) #7

You can already choose via cards though. I simply want weapons removed from cards so we can play how we want but still have cool stuff with the cards.

The way I always looked at it was it’s a matter of balance depending on the other perks. Perhaps if you have added mobility, they give you a slower firerate (i.e. shotgun) and so on. Just my guess.

You can choose from a subset of weapons that devs considered balanced for that merc. If you see mercs as MOBA characters, this balance of tying weapons&mercs is necessary. Proxy with LMG, Aura with assault rifle, picking people off distance with a plopped healing station : not gonna happen.

After playing non-stop for the beta test, I found out that they’re actually just loadout cards.
Woops.
But still, I’m worried about the keys. I don’t know if we have to buy them or we can get them with in-game credits, or as drops like crates.
Apologies if this has already been cleared up.

That isn’t what I was thinking. I wanted to be able to pick weapons from your class. Weapons that already come with cards and choose whether or not you want that sort of terrible light machine gun or the extremely powerful short ranged shotgun. And then use the cards as they are where the perks make the card and not balance them based on weapon choice.

I don’t want Aura running around with an LMG.

cosmetics are fine, they’re great even. It’s a way for the devs to earn money without hurting gameplay in any way.
The problem will be when you can gain an advantage ingame through paying.

I am 100% fine with the game loading up cosmetics into the game. As seen with CS:GO it not only works out but it turns a game that doesn’t have very high numbers into a game that is now getting 500k players at peak time when the first year of the game struggled for 30k. Valve’s support and economy has really made it a game that served a lot of purposes for a lot of people and kept people playing. So if SD can do that with Dirty Bomb I’d be all for it.

However, the issue some companies run into is that these cosmetics cost money and time to create (which Valve resolved with their community creations making it into the game) so it’s a lot easier to modify backend stats and start to edge into that murky f2p scummy category that other games have gone to.
