message to Splash Damage: one version of brink without steam

(heXen) #1

really, please, a DVD case versione without steam, for who do not want to install steam but wants to play Brink.

(AnthonyDa) #2

YEAH, let’s create a steam group for boycott of BRINK if STEAM is required to play !

(INF3RN0) #3

I would be up for it. I see no reason to narrow the chances for success or to cut the community in half unnecessarily…

(Senethro) #4

The thing is, as someone already pointed out, Steamworks api does a bunch of stuff like friendslist, achievements and others more easily than Splash Damage coding it from scratch. This means if they create a non-Steam version they’ll have to take extra time and resources to make a version of the game that works for the people who refuse to use Steam. That means less resources towards the rest of the game.

Steam is just a DRM solution with a bunch of added value community features. If you’re still buying AAA games in the past couple of years then you’ll likely have used other DRM solutions that are worse. And if the best selling and most boycotted game of last year was able to use Steam then why can’t Brink?

QW Has all those systems and they don’t have to do anything from scratch.

That’s why i always used no-cd crack even though i owned those games legit, i couldn’t bare to wait 15 extra seconds for the game to start

(Joe999) #6

wtf steam?!?  :frowning:

(Senyin) #7

Is steam required to play?
I do NOT want steam

(Senethro) #8

My guess would be they don’t have Activision’s support (hah!) because ATVI handled all the web stuff and stats servers, etc, right? ATVI maybe even owns the code outright. There are plenty of reasons why using Steamworks may have been a good idea.

That’s why I always used Steam version, I couldn’t bare to waste 15 minutes cracking the game or finding the disc.

(AnthonyDa) #9

Yeah patch 1.5 was done without game code… ho wait.

(Senethro) #10

By support I mean ATVI doing some of the server and friendlist code because of how they owned and ran the servers and stuff. Which patch 1.5 would have been irrelevent to.

(Nail) #11

too bad, you’re wrong again, id Software owns the code, and it’s all done in engine, Activision just ran the physical stat servers, they don’t code anything, they’re a publisher

(Senethro) #12

id software who weren’t necessarily in partnership with Splash Damage at the time the decision to use Steam was made, even though subsequently they’ve done a merger with SD’s publisher?

Like I said in my previous post, I don’t know what the actual reason was. They’re not in the habit of doing something for no reason though, so I’m sure that they made it because it benefits the development of Brink.

(Nail) #13

my post was about QW, but apparently your 1 track mind can’t grasp literate conversation

(Voxie) #14

Oh the irony.

(Ryan) #15

I do NOT want STEAM on my PC
One of the reasons I do NOT play MW2!

Stupid piece of malware ****

If this game doesn’t come as a hard copy I ain’t buying it!

PS: Senethro must be getting paid by SD or something. No way he can be such a fanboy without even having played the game, or can he?

(Nail) #16

nah, he just likes to troll my posts

(H0RSE) #17

even if it comes with a hard copy, couldn’t Steam still be needed to play it?

(Senethro) #18

My post was about Brink, but apparently you can’t keep up with a conversation.

Brink isn’t ET:QW.

(SockDog) #20

As has been said I don’t think this is possible. AFAIK the Steamworks API is an integral part of the Steam platform.

This doesn’t mean you can’t buy a DVD and install, we shouldn’t confuse Steam distribution with Steam utilisation. It’s just that you’ll have to install and run Steam to play the game.

In as much as SD making a version without steam, why? SD are using MS and Sony APIs for the console releases, using resources to placate a tiny fragment of people who delude themselves that Steam is evil is pointless. While I’m sure they’re sympathetic to the even smaller group of people with genuine reasons to avoid Steam I think it’s just so small a group that it isn’t practical to worry about.

All that aside. IMO it just makes a whole lot more sense to have a game platform and associated community features separate and running independently from the actual games.

Now it would be nice if SD could confirm Nail’s main objection of offline/Lan play with steam. Maybe if loaded in offline mode you can connect to a lan server via the console?
