Merc Selection and Customization Menus

Since my old thread was getting a bit messy after a few updates, I’m starting a new one to collect all the issues with the merc selection and customization UI that are still outstanding.

Model issues:

Common:

  • Foregrip grabs are still off for Fragger, Skyhammer, Arty and Bushwhacker (but only after he flexes his fingers, then they slowly close up properly).
  • Magazines are missing all around except in the weapon customization menu where some do and some don’t.
  • It looks like the friend/foe rim lighting is now being applied (at least partially) in the merc selection and customization menus. The merc models have blue edge highlights that I can’t explain otherwise…
  • Jiggle-boned parts on the models that have them (Aimee and Skyhammer) are excessively “jiggly”: way too much movement for the slightest perturbation and not enough damping to fade it out, it just looks silly.
  • The range limits on many of the texture LODs would need to be tweaked. On several mercs brand logos and other distinct details can be clearly seen switching from blurry to crisp when you zoom in and out on the models. On Fragger, Stoker & Kira, it seems the highest LOD is never reached (either that or the highest texture LOD for these mercs is not as hi-rez as those of the others…). Fragger’s MG is always shown in low-rez in the selection and customization menus.

Merc-Specific:

[li]Aimee:[/li]- Her jiggle-boned bag is clipping with her riffle and the movement is making its strap look like it a rubber band.

  • Her pistol holster is now also jiggle-boned even though it has a strap around her thigh (that thing should
    not be able to move at all!).

  • The baked-in shadow for her bag on her right hip doesn’t line up with the bag (she looks like there’s a
    dark patch on her pants). Similarly for the shadow of the silencer on her pistol.

[li]Kira: Severe clipping all over her right side: elbow vs jacket, gun stock vs arm, gun sight vs leg[/li]

[li]Nader: Looks like with her primary switch she inherited Phoenix old idle stance with all its problems. Both hands are not holding the gun properly, especially the left one, and the stock is buried in the nades on her shoulder.[/li]

[li]Phantom: Clipping between the thighs and the rear flaps of his coat on the sides.[/li]

[li]Phoenix: Clipping between his right arm near the elbow and his poncho.[/li]

[li]Proxy: Idle animation has shotgun clipping with shell bandolier on her hip (not too noticeable) and pouch on her chest (much more noticeable).[/li]

[li]Rhino: Hose clipping on left leg. [/li]

[li]Sawbonez: Clipping between apron and right leg.[/li]

[li]Skyhammer: Clipping between ammo packs and legs, between the flaps of his vest and his legs, and between his arm and the antenna of his front radio when holding his headset. At least the antennas stopped spinning…[/li]

[li]Sparks: Her left hand looks weird, like she’s holding something that isn’t there, and it clips with her bag when her arm sways. [/li]

[li]Stoker: Same idle stance as Nader with the same issues, plus the gun clips with his gas mask.[/li]

[li]Thunder: Clipping with both grenades on his chest, left one with his arm, right one with his MG.[/li][/ul]

Merc overview and ability info issues:

[ul]
[li]Aimee: No description for Third Eye Camera[/li]

[li]Fletcher: Wrong secondary weapon [/li]

[li]Kira: Unusually long overview, no description for Ammo Station, and AR is identified as Steyr AUG (real name vs copyright issues, also called “Stark” riffle in update fluff)[/li]

[li]Nader: GL not showing as an ability[/li]

[li]Redeye: No description for Smoke Grenade or IR Goggles while BR is labeled “TBD” (it was identified as a “Harvey-Cantius M4-10” in the fluff of his update)[/li]

[li]Rhino: Minigun is shown as both an ability and his primary weapon[/li]

[li]Sawbonez: No description for Health Packs[/li]

[li]Sparks: No description for her (“TBD”) and the description for her Health Packs is incorrect (would actually apply to Sawbonez’s) [/li]

[li]Stoker: No description for Ammo Station[/li][/ul]

Weapon customization issues:

[li]Paint jobs need to have names that don’t look like the names of software variables. “GRID CAMO” feels much less awkward than “CAMO_GRID”. The use of the prefix “CAMO_” is especially inappropriate for the “corporate” skins (Edge, Mudflood, etc… but also SD, Nexon, etc…) as they clearly are not camouflage patterns.[/li]

[li]The weird “Default” skins are gone, but the “None” option is still not back, so it remains impossible to revert to the original look of a weapon once you’ve customized it. [/li]

[li]When selecting a skin in the weapon customization page vertical and horizontal scroll bars appear around the list, both of which are useless as the entire list is already visible. The vertical one might eventually be of use if there are enough skins available, but there shouldn’t ever be a need for the horizontal one unless skins are given ridiculously long names.[/li]

[li]The merc outfit selection page is not showing the skin currently selected for the primary weapon (but the squad page does).[/li]

[li]Secondary weapon not visible in customization menu for Fragger, Kira, Nader, Phantom, Rhino, Stoker and Redeye[/li]

[li]Wrong weapon shown in customization menu for Fletcher secondary.[/li]

[li]Although there are skins listed for Sparks revive gun, they do not have any effect.[/li][/ul]

Other issues:

  • You can’t take screenshots using the built-in function (F12) unless you are in game. This used to work everywhere, including the selection / customization pages and the server browser.
  • On the merc selection page, the merc overview text does not refresh properly when switching merc. If the new text is shorter than the previously-displayed one, the last few lines remain:



  • The portraits for Fragger and Rhino on the selection page still clash with the others due to the close-up framing. Also these portraits need to carry over to the in-game menu that is still using the old ones in some cases.
  • There should be an “allied/enemy” toggle when viewing the merc skins to be able to preview both versions. The Barracks page seen in this video http://forums.warchest.com/showthread.php/39533-Sprint-02-2014-UI shows a Skin Toggle feature, so hopefully it’s coming…
  • In the merc or customization menu, you can zoom in and out with the mouse wheel, but if you zoom in too far, the point of view sometimes suddenly switch to a completely different one, much further than the maximum zoom out, and the background goes black.



  • If you return to the squad page after having zoomed in on a merc or weapon model in their respective customization menus, sometimes the zoom remains in effect in the squad page (all three models are zoomed in equally).



  • With high video settings teary / stary eyes are sometimes seen on the female models. Also, Aura’s face is very shinny, like it’s made of plastic (either that or she needs to switch to a new make-up brand…).

Selection page preview issues:

In the merc selection page, when you click on the portrait of a merc, the preview models will sometimes show a different skin than the one currently selected for that merc. There are 2 variants of this:

[li]Any merc selected after Kira or Rhino will come up wearing the “default” skin.[/li]

[li]When selecting a merc wearing the CoreSec skin (only Fragger, Redeye, Sparks and Phantom at the moment) the preview model always wear the same skin as the previously-shown merc. This does not affect the actual skin he/she will wear in game or in the squad page. [/li][/ul]
Both issues are possibly related to incorrect management of the skin indexes since they involve mercs that either don’t have the complete skin set (Rhino) or use a skin that is not available to most other mercs (CoreSec)

Some additional issues following the Kira update (1st post updated accordingly):

Kira:

[ul]
[li]Preview model is another one suffering from textures remaining fuzzy up close[/li]

[li]Her idle animation also has severe clipping all over her right side: elbow vs jacket, gun stock vs arm, gun sight vs leg[/li]

[li]Somehow she rated a full essay as her description (15 lines vs 3-6 for the other mercs), but at least that one clears up properly when selecting another merc[/li]

[li]As for Stoker, no info about the ammo station[/li]

[li]Her AR is identified as a for-real Steyr AUG while we were told earlier that real names would not be used for copyright reasons and the update poster called is a “Stark” riffle[/li]

[li]Secondary doesn’t show in customization (as for Rhino)[/li]

[li]She’s causing the same skin mismatches as Rhino when selecting merc in the selection page, which tends to confirm the problem comes from these mercs not having a full set of skins[/li][/ul]

Nader:

[ul]
[li]Primary and secondary have been corrected in her specs, but they are not showing up in the customization[/li]

[li]Her GL no longer shows up in her abilities or weapons[/li][/ul]

Some updates following patch v33694:

[li]The jiggle-bone effects on Fragger have been removed, but Aimee and Skyhammer still have their wiggly bits[/li]

[li]Nader’s primary is now visible in the weapon customization menu[/li]

[li]When selecting a skin in the weapon customization page vertical and horizontal scroll bars appear around the list, both of which are useless as the entire list is already visible. The vertical one might eventually be of use if there are enough skins available, but there shouldn’t ever be a need for the horizontal one unless skins are given ridiculously long names.[/li]

[li]The temporary skin swaps when switching merc in the selection page seems to be corrected, but the anomalies associated with the CoreSec skin and the mercs with a limited skin set remain[/li][/ul]

First post has been updated accordingly.

I can confirm the bug in the customization menu:

The bug is live in the latest build : (4th of May 2014). Just use the mouse wheel as much as you can, it will pop out eventually
