Merc Personalization-Kits

(Thai-San) #1

Hello my dear Dirty Bombers,

after following the forum for a while I noticed that many of us (including me) would like some kind of cosmetics. Right now we just have load out-cards with different rarities which gives them their camps and that’s it with the customization.
I played TF2 for a long time and I really liked the hats, but since there is coming more and more stuff (not only hats but also jackets and shoes) some combination are pretty ridicules and that wouldn’t fit Dirty Bomb.

But what if Splash Damage would introduce Personalization-Kits?
Let’s say you go to the store and there are three different Kits.
Burned, Toxic and Radiated for example.
You buy one of those for like 5-10 bucks and then you get the kit you wanted which can be combined with one of your cards.

Here is a ruff sketch of what I had in mind:

Now the new style is paired with your card and whenever you have that card equipped with that merc he not only changes the camo depending on the rarity but also the model to the paired style.

This way SD can control that a customized merc still looks like the merc he is.

What do you guys think?

I like this idea. It doesn’t even need to change their entire look, different kits could be sold that effect the mercs clothing and guns, for instance. Having the entire theme of a merc changed by the card doesn’t give you much in the way of customization using the current system. I’d like to be able to pick from my available gun skins and apply them to loadouts or something.

Hmmm I’m worry about the fact it could mess up the design of mercs. Which means that it would be more difficult to tell apart mercs. If it’s just textures why not, but swapping models seems a bit risky in my opinion.

But still I like that idea  , oh and good job for creating the “toxic” loadout card, it’s definitly classy

As long as mercs are still recognisable, I’m not against.

Currenly, the mercs look exactly the same with all tiers of loadout cards, so this would be cool.

+1

Yeah I agree to some degree.
Right now you see a merc and know instantly what you’re dealing with and it should stay that way. But look at the founder cards. They have different models (Proxy with googles instead of her welding mask-thingy, Fragger with a Helmet, Sawbonez without the bandana but with a scarf and sunglasses) but you still know who they are. And even if you don’t recognize them the first time you see them (which I did) you will see the card if you get killed by them and at that point you know who they are.
That’s why I suggest those Kits and not free customization like in TF2. The devs can create a skin that looks good and different, but not so different that you have no Idea who that merc is supposed to be.

My Toxic-Arty was just an example. I know it’s totally over the top and no one would recognize him as arty and wouldn’t work this way. But if we stick to the Idea of a gas mask a half face double filter gas mask would be okay imo. You still see the helmet and his pants with are his two main recognition points.

I like this idea, give me, the idea of being able to change something besides color is really welcomed.

So I’m the first guy who’s put a dislike in. I guess I’ll explain myself.

I agree in the fact, that some more customization would be fitting to the game, however I personally like (predetermined) themes as Toxic, Burned, Radiation etc.
Also I feel like the themes you mentioned fit all into “Post-apocalyptic”, which I don’t see suitable to Dirty Bomb in general.

Maybe you can convince me with a broader range of options.

EDIT: I oversaw you agreed Toxic Arty was an exaggeration.

1 guy missclicked dislike

really good idea though to modify just 1 card, huge cashgrab

The Kits I named (“Burned, Toxic and Radiated”) where just examples. They could be named and designed in any way the devs want them to be. I just thought those were kinda fitting for a “radiation ravaged London”-setting.

The whole topic is not about the Kits/Styles/Skins I named, it’s just about the idea of “Merc Personalization-Kits”

So, do you disliked the idea (which is what this is about) or the examples (which are just examples, obviously ^^)?

(flow) #11

Probably the examples.

I can’t think of many possible do’s other than varying some of the colors or camo (as it is somewhat done already) without making it too disturbing as practised in TF2 and/or Dota2 and many other games.

Maybe this is where I would pick up:
Make a personalization-kit, that you can apply to a Loadout to change the Pattern/Colour of that specific loadout. Like an editor with numerous unlockable/randomly dropped/fee-based options (reference to Guild Wars 2).

Yes, maybe even themes.

I’m all for SD creating content that changes how the mercs look and monetizing the hell out of it. As long as it does not affect gameplay, hell yes. Give us good options on customization both with gameplay (that’s not paid for) and with looks (that is paid for) and we’ll be in business.
