Since the background story of the game revolves around a whole city (London) having had to be evacuated due to an outbreak of some sort it would make sense to have mercs affected by it.
Maybe a merc that had been to the contaminated zone too many times -or- perhaps it was a bio weapon, he was affected but didn’t die and now he is fighting to get those responsible. Maybe he was one of the ‘bad guys’ who deployed the bio weapon, but didn’t got out in time, and he now wants to see the work finished.
This could give you guys at SD material for a few more mercs.
Here are just a few of possible abilities I thought of for the mercs:
- heat vision
- see through walls
- go through walls
- become immaterial, to escape bullets. Could not hack while at it.
- super speed. Could not shoot while speeding
- decoy. Could generate a copy of him/herself
- bio traps/gooey stuff - that could be sticky to the enemy or just slow them down
- repulsion wave, pushing back adversaries
- bio armour, temporary higher resistance to damage
Could even replicate existing mercs habilities but using the infected/mutated backstory. For example:
- invisible, such as Phantom
- commanding bugs or weather effect (cyclone, ligtnhing, etc) to attack an area, such as Arty’s artillery attack
- fire, such as Stoker’s molotov
- could heal with his/her hands or presence, such as Phoenix’s healing aura
- bio proximity mines, like Proxy’s, but that could stick to any surface, like Fletcher’s
- explode if unstable, like Nader’s martyrdom
Visually I thought about the following - just mix and match to your taste:
- different skin tones (grey, yellowish, bluish, green, etc)
- different eye colours
- bandages, on body parts (head, arms, etc) or all over
- medical themed apparatus (such as attached IV/blood bags or health monitors to the uniform)
- Disease Control unit uniform/protective gear (more likely to protect others from him/his condition)
- IF going with the mutated look I would avoid extreme mutations such as 4 eyes or extra limbs and keep to varying the proportions of existing body parts. The mutations could be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
A subject that it’s only limited by your imagination …and the game’s general look and feel.
The Infected/Mutated backstory could also tie in with your monetisation model to generate new skins for existing mercs.
