Merc Idea - Chameleon

(prophett) #1

I wanted to put my own twist on Spookify’s original post which I thought would be a great addition to the gamehere
#1) Camaleon (AKA Camel)
I was thinking player only starts with a secondary gun.
BUT - Has the ability to take the gun of the person that they kill and use it as their primary
Has the ability to hax the team color desinator and change it to the other teams color for a short time. If a enemy looks directly at her no color will appear and the enemy will know they are not friendly.
Knife switched out for a: Machete or some type or jungle weapon or a grapple because irl a camaleon has that sticky tongue.
Class: Covert
Primary Weapon: A silenced SMG (more effective than Vasilli’s current secondary)
Secondary Weapon: Silenced Pistol
Ability: Can do a bodyscan of gibbed enemies and steal their identity/disguise cloak. The only thing that doesn’t change is the gun - this is how enemy players would be able to differentiate between him and the actual person he is disguised as or allow him to steal the gun and have the name indicator above his head not change when he is in disguise.

Add in some team/locked doors capable of only being opened by one team that he can sneak through when disguised and we’ve got a winner (am I reinventing the wheel here? - this sounds familiar)

Maybe something like this with more robotic parts, a body scanner sort of thing instead of the claw (and no sword, of course)

Personally I vilify this kind of character. In fact I would probably go further than that and say it is out right bad game design in an FPS. It completely unsporting, impossible to balance and just something that should be left to MMOs, RTSs and etc.

MY opinion of course. But I tend to fall out with games shortly after the implement something like this.

ETQW had this and it was fun to disguise yourself and backstab enemies. But wasnt to hard to spot because your footstep sound not the same, same for your breathing. Also you didnt appear as “friendly” on the radar.

In DB it will be even less of a problem.

See, in ET anyone could always be disguised. But in DB that one disguising merc has it’s own character look and silhouette. The moment anyone on the team spots that dude sneaking around everyone knows to watch for disguised players (in an already smaller team).

In other words, in the ET games it was much easier to ‘disappear’ into the fray of combat. In DB not so.

This in turn though could lead to the merc having more interesting abilities to use in conjunction with his disguise. Like not losing his disguise on actions or whatever.

Team only doors would need to be added to maps in order for this character/ability to play an important role

(Glottis-3D) #6

also team-only areas / corridors (with automatic lethal turrets like in ETQW)

The doors could be hacked by all coverts but it will take time and give a side-objective warning to the enemy. Only the chameleon can pass quietly and instantly.
