Merc Concept

(AnonOmis1000) #1

So this idea more or less sprung into my mind and I thought I’d share it. It may suck (as most of my ideas tend to) but a bad idea sometimes can trigger someone else to have a good one. So lets just throw shit at the wall and see what sticks!

ABILITY:
The idea I had is similar to the ammo packs and health pack dropped by existing mercs. Instead, what this merc’s ability would be is that he/she would drop armor (or armour since this game is set in the UK). The armor that is dropped would be a one time use HP booster. It would add XP to the mercs health bar on top of the default max HP. this HP is depleted first before the mercs actual HP. The difference being that the armor does not regenerate. Once it’s gone it’s gone.

Now, there’s obviously the concern that you could make any merc into a take this way, but I think there’s a way it could be balanced. First, the armor gained from these drops would have a set maximum across all mercs. It wouldn’t matter if you were playing Proxy or Rhino, you’d still get (say 30) HP. This could be topped off if you lost some of your armor HP, but it could not go above the set maximum. Another way to balance it would be that it takes time for you to equip the armor. You would have to stand over it and hold the use key to actually “put on” the armor. This would prevent tactics such as having this merc constantly throwing armor packs onto a merc to make them tank damage from the enemy. Finally, the number of packs this merc could carry, the time it takes to “put on”, and how long the cooldown would be would be balancing points. Another could potentially be a slight reduction in movement speed depending on how much of the armor is left.

CLASS:
I’m not really sure which class this merc would be. I don’t think they’d be recon, medic, or engineer. However, depending on if the “rules” for engineers change, he/she could potentially be an engineer. I think the most fitting would be either fire support or straight up assault. If fire support, I think an ammo station would make more sense than ammo packs, but really it’s six in one, half a dozen in the other. It also potentially could just be that their only ability is to give out armor as a fire support merc, since that in and of itself is pretty big.

WEAPONS:
I think rifles should be the primary weapon type for this merc. In particular, I’d really love to see a new rifle that bases it’s design off the FAMAS. It’s a very iconic weapon and I think it would look right at home in Dirty Bomb. As for it’s stats I’d expect it to be fast firing but lower damage than fully automatic rifles like the M4A1 and Timik-47. Their other primary weapons would be the Stark AR and M4A1.

For secondaries, I think the Simeon .357, M9, and Selbstadt .40 would fit well. Of course you could really argue for any semiauto pistol.

For melee, it’d probably be similar to most mercs. I don’t the the Kukri would fit though.

CHARACTERISTICS:
Because of the new rifle I suggested, I, of course, think this merc should be French. I know we have Aimee coming out, who is French, but there’s nothing saying we cant have another. Besides, we already have 5 American mercs on the payroll. If not directly from France in origin, he/she could come from another area with French influence such as one of their various territories in the Caribbean, around Madagascar, or in Polynesia.

As for their attitude, that’d be up for discussion. I really can’t argue for or against any particular personality. However, depending on what Aimee’s attitude is, perhaps uptight and a touch elitist wouldn’t be unfitting.

And finally health/running speed (since I didn’t think this quite fit anywhere else): If he/she is going to be a fire support or assault merc, they’d be slower but have more health since that seems to be the general trend of these merc classes. In addition, given their ability being giving armor, which is known for being restrictive on the wearer, them being tankier and slower would make sense.

I’m REALLY loving the idea of “armor”, especially for players who love supporting their team but dislike playing a Medic. A Merc who can buff other players yet isn’t subjected to the pressure of both healing and reviving their team sounds so good to me:

Gameplay:

  • A Fire Support class is the best choice since these classes also provide ammo (and they have “support” in their title too). Whether this Merc actually provides “fire” support via a combative ability is up to you.
  • Your weapons of choice are sensible, and you’re right about the Kukri.
  • Symmetra from Overwatch fits a similar description with her ability to add extra defense to allies. They can only equip it until death and it takes time to recharge which makes it fair. However, considering how quick it is to die in Dirty Bomb, perhaps the armor could last even after respawn or multiple deaths?
  • Dirty Bomb is a very fast game, and “putting on” armor might be a bit of a hassle.
  • Reduced speed when wearing it sounds great.

Aesthetics:

  • The only exception as to why it’s acceptable for so many American Mercs to be in the game is due to each one representing different parts of the country, same with the UK Mercs (Proxy the working middle class, Stoker high class, Skyhammer the Scottish etc)
  • Aimee represents the high fashion city life of France via Paris, so if you’d like another French Merc perhaps they could come from a more traditional or remote part of France (or the other places you’ve mentioned).
  • Based off Aimee’s dialogue, she’s definitely a fashionista, but rather than be snobby she’s got the personality of a pleasant detective who just wants decent food and respect.
  • A bigger female Merc from a French background would make a GREAT contrast with Aimee’s smaller frame. Plus women are outnumbered 3/1 in the current roster.

Your idea of “armor” and this Merc makes for a perfect alternative to a support class which isn’t a Medic, and if refined further I could definitely see as an official Dirty Bomb character.

The time to put on the armor would be short. Probably on par woth the time it takes,to pick up the data cores.

I also don’t think it should stay after you die. In order to get killed while having armor, the armor would have had to been depleted to 0 already.

I think a potential other support ability would be to deploy a small bubble. It would have much lower HP than whatever Turtles shield will have, but covers from all angles and from above.

I don’t think we need and more mercs with big damage abilities like Arty, Skyhammer, or Kira. If this merc is fire support, I think they should be similar to Stoker, having some sort of throwable weapon. Maybe a gas grenade? Though that doesn’t really fit the character of one that’s heavy on defense.

I was thinking the name could be “Bastion” and could work for either male or female.

I’m pretty sure I commented on this armor Idea previously. It makes medics less useful in terms of healing. These are just health kits which over heal. While meds may be good at reviving, your merc has better combat potential and healing capacity than Pheonix.

Keep in mind that 30 hp on an aura is WAY different than 30 HP on an Arty. One is harder to hit, and one has massive firepower. Not all mercs are created equal in balance. - Also, is there any way to prevent this merc from using the armor packs the way Sparks does her medpacks? What’s to encourage sharing when you can become super tanky after laying out a few armor packs to pick up mid-firefight? - How would this work with multiples of the same merc on a team? Are all armor packs non-stack-able, or do the owners of the packs count?

Also.
Torbjörn would like a word with you.

Armor doesn’t stack. The max would be whatever the armor HP is. So you could never get more than 30 (or whatever the max is determined to be for balancing). It doesn’t matter who the pack is from, be it an enemy or teammate.

Since they take a second or two to equip, you can’t just pick it up in the middle of a fight.

There’s also the possibility that the armor could act more like armor in CS GO does, absorbing a percentage of the damage. I was also thinking that this armor would only apply to the torso. Hits to the limbs or head would bypass this armor HP.

And I’ll wait to talk to him when he’s done talking to the Engie from TF2.

Q~Q I wish the engie from tf2 had armor giving abilities… The closest thing we have to making the engie tanky is a dispenser and the gunslinger.

Also, if armor is balanced the way you’re listing, by percentage, it could be very valuable and balanced with testing. +1 for likes.
(Although 20 percent of a rhino isn’t 20 percent of a proxy, so it may be a bit awkward.)

I’m just throwing out different ideas so people smarter than me could figure it out.
