.mdc files

(kland) #1

ok… Ive made a mod to the knife in ET. It shows fine in first person, but when you see another player, it doesn’t show up. I found out that this is because the other player’s knife was another model. I found it it’s an .mdc file. So I opened it did my edits, but now I can’t save it because i cannot find a software with an .mdc exporter (besides 3ds). Anyone have any Ideas? Are there any .md3 to .mdc converters? Or will the .md3 still work? Will ET recognize the different extension?

Plz…someone help…

you dont need to, look in the pk3’s for the weapon text files

these control what moddles are draw for what weapons so change then to ur md3 versions

also a trap i fell into, if the weapons is called knife.mdc dont replace it with knife.md3 as like searching for textures it searches for .mdc files first regardless of file extension so it would find the defult knife.mdc and stop looking then so would never find your knfe.md3

so… let me get this straight…

I have the find the txt file that has the patch to the .mdc file and change it to .md3? Then remove the .mdc and replace it with my .md3?

just change the extension of your .md3 to .mdc teh file types are so similar that it wont make a difference taht i am aware of

You’re better off calling your model file something “very” different, such as klandknife.md3, and then changing the entry in the .weap file from knife.mdc to klandknife.md3

Remember; NEVER EDIT THE STANDARD GAME PK3s. Extract what you need, edit it, and put it in your own PK3 with an alphanumerically later name (most people recommend adding z_ to the beginning)…

why people never say how to export to mdc?? it would be a lot easyer.

No, actually, it wouldn’t.
The way you do it is to export to MD3, then the game converts all the models to MDC after you turn on a switch in the console and re-start the game.
The point is that if you can be bothered to mess about like that, you might as well edit the .weap files which, by the way, is FAR easier than making MDCs. This is especially an issue if you get something wrong in the model first time, and have to do it all again.

IIRC, every time the MDC question has come up, the Splash Damage guys have said to stick with MD3 and not to bother with MDC.

Something to add is that MDCs are compressed MD3s, so using raw MD3 actually saves processing time.
