MD3 models too big in the game

(nonoMapper) #1

Howdy,

since a few weeks i am experimenting with Blender 2.63 and i got the forming etc. under control . It is going pretty fine i must say and it’s actually fun to model when you know the shortcuts.

For example i model a simple grenade, export it to MD3 and load it in the game.

My problem here is: the model is too big when i load it up in the game.
I tried several howto’s and i’ve read a few documents about scaling and sizing but with results that are bad in terms of SOMETIMES it’s bigger, SOMETIMES it doesnt change the size at all (in the game) after resizing.
So i think i am doing something essentially wrong.

Maybe someone knows a howto or can explain the exact way to resize a model so it fits in the game.
I hope i am a bit clear about my problem

Secondly, are there any maximum or minimum heights/widths for models? I know blender operates with blender units etc. but are there any official numbers about sizes of the ET models?

Thanks in advance:)

Hi
you need look intp EB pk3. learning maps to learn scale models in GTK radiant or look into Goldrush map , click on some palm model in map and look how is scalig done .
Btw. Iam exporting md3 from gmax , a bit know Blender , try scale down model in Blender or scale in GTK Radiant

Thanks for answering Kic.

Well i try to stick to blender only. I test the MD3 models directly in the game so blender and that should be enough (i guess).

The problem is that i can resize it in blender without a problem but the game doesnt see it or the export is broken which i don’t think 'cause sometimes the export is ok, sometime there is no difference at all when i load the model in the game.

So my bet is that i forget to apply something or something else which i can’t think of nor find it on the internet. It’s killing me since 2 days.Help

…maybe it has something to do with the units.

Blender is kind of crap with all the units, like scaling itself things smaller sometimes!
I use the old blender (2.49b) with old plugins and it goes fine, might be your plugin that’s not perfect!

(nonoMapper) #5

Well i only use Katbits MD3 exporter. It partly seem to work and i think the plugin is fine too since i feel i am the only one with this problem…
If i export for example the standard CUBE into MD3, it all looks fine in the game.

If i use the same cube and make it TALLER, i get a taller cube in the game BUT if i make the cube FLATTER it looks ok in blender but in the game its FLAT but also 4x as big in width. As if it is some volume thingie.

Backsnip3 i prefer to stick with blender 2.63 cause i finally know how to shape stuff pretty easy PLUS it’s usage is totally different in 2.49 afaik.
(unless its really bugged which i don’t know…)

Do you edit size using the scaling tool or do you enter a new overall size in the transformation widget? I think you need to scale it for real and keep the overall scalings to 1,1,1. Dunno if you get what I mean?

(nonoMapper) #7

The overall scale setting is 1,1,1 and i tried both, using the S)cale or a new overall size.
Is it possible that if i press CTRL-R (cut) it adds something to the current size allthough i only cut the cube in 4 pieces to give it a form.

(i didn’t understand what you mean by “scale it for real”.)

(BackSnip3) #8

I meant using the “S” scale by “for real”. You did that and it didn’t fix it anyway…
Try exporting to another format of file(like .obj), and import it back? Maybe it’s your blender playing jokes, no idea now. :frowning:
Good luck fixing it

Thanks for the help, i keep on trying

(nonoMapper) #10

Maybe a small question: do you resize in edit or object mode or doesnt matter?

(BackSnip3) #11

Shouldn’t matter, it’s the same I think, I’m not a big pro with blender, can’t tell, I only use it to export/animate my models! Keep on modelling!

(nonoMapper) #12

Just so anyone who reads this thread knows what i mean visually:

Here i create a standard box (file -> new -> reload startupfile)

Here you see the box and added loops (? i hope i am right it’s called loops or cuts…)

Here you see i’ve flatten the cube

And here you see the result in the game. It’s like it’s quadruped or something like that. This only happens if i make it FLAT, not TALLER.

Reading a reply from Mateos today solved my problem. With the md3 exporter update my problems are gone.

Thanks Mateos for the solution

Ahh… Hmm no problem x)

The High Resolution Pack for Duke Nukem 3D uses MD3 models, they have some good resources as well on these forums and various websites. Even a per-pixel dyanmic lighting rendering, the Polymer, allowing POM, on a game released in 1996…

Hehe nah i am pretty happy that the exporter is exporting as it should. Now i can continue the struggle;)
