MAX GAMESTATECHARS EXCEEDED ?

Hi

Sometimes when my map 2tanks has its game end, it disconnects all players from the server with the msg:

MAX_GAMESTATECHARS_EXCEEDED

The game end code for this map is not particularly different from any other, and I don’t know what causes this error. The players can all reconnect no problem, and arrive in time to still see the end game picture before the next campaign starts.

The only unusual thing about the map is that is has a churchill and jagdpanther in operation at the same time, one for each team. But try as I might, I can’t find anything wrong in the game end script that might account for this.

Can anyone tell me what the error msg means, and maybe how I can stop this from happening?

Hey 2Bit,

MrFin had this same problem with bridges beta’s 2-4 and he believed it was an entities problem…too many I believe. Anyway that is the message our server got after each crash. pm me for MrFin’s e-mail if you like and maybe he can help you with a fix.

What version of your map ?
so I can look at it as well…just incase.

Also…how many .pk3’s are in the servers ‘used’ map directory ? (etmain/mod)

Thanks Juno_who, I will PM you in case MrFin can help. I don’t know if it an entities limit thing: the map plays fine, it’s only sometimes at game end that this error might occur. Not always. I’d’ve thought it would always work or never work if there was an entities limit I’ve reached.

There aren’t many entities in the map really. Anyway, 1 PM coming right up :drink:

Thanks EB, this error has occurred at least in the last 2 versions. The latest version had some script tweaks to see if I could stop the occasional game-end crash. It didn’t help :???:

The latest version is 1.7.1 and you are welcome to download it from www.pythononline.co.uk/et if you like.

I don’t know how many PK3s are in the used folder - I’d have to ask the server admins for that info, I don’t have direct access to the server space. I’ll come back with what I can find out.

Hello

There was an end game server crash issue going on with bridges_beta4 as juno rightly pointed out - I personally am not too sure what caused this but it didnt occurr on all servers - You could approach the JUHU clan admins as they run bridges_betas without any crashes - I think.
so my (wild) guess is that it may be a server side settings problem as I think EB is thinking.

The last action I took to amend this was to reduce the number of active entities in the map -
but don’t really know if this will help - has yet to be tested.

Hi and thanks for your thoughts - lately the map ends perfectly normally and the new campaign starts. It tempts me to think the problem has “gone away” with the latest server changes. But I’ve been here before…

It’s the GAMESTATECHARS that’s interesting. I suspect the fault is mine somewhere, and that I’ve entered a recursive loop which max’s out at 1024 at some point. I found this sort of thing a while ago in another map when I had a destroyed entity trigger a target_effect and then reset itself. However the target_effect re-destroyed the original entity before it had time to complete its current execution and off we went into a very tight loop until a 1024 limit was hit. I don’t remember if it was the gamestatechars things that came up but I do recall that introducing a 500ms delay into the death procedure of the entity solved the problem.

I don’t have this setup in 2tanks, so this won’t be the exact answer, but I do wonder about a timing element being critical in whether or not the error occurs.

If I ever find out I’ll post it here.
