Massive Update Size

(DarkMatterMatt) #1

I have noticed that the update size for dirty bomb appears to be about 1.7gb for each update. I was just wondering if there is actually 1.7gb of files changed (that’s half the game), or if you have to do a massive update for not very large changes. Is it possible to make the updates smaller, and just update what has been changed?

Thanks,
DMM (a guy on a limited internet plan)

ps. sorry if I have posted something wrong, or in the wrong place, it’s my first post. Feel free to correct me but please be nice and don’t scare me away

This is a pretty common thing with UE3 due to packed files being the norm. DB will pretty much always have large updates.

I believe it has to do with the way the game engine updates, early on updates were full game

Wtb engine that uses unpackaged files.

They added new prototype map! I’m uploading footage on youtube…

Rather than changing files within the game packages, the game just outright replaces them. It’s cleaner, but it does take up more bandwidth.

Wait, so if every update will be that big, can i expect game wasting enormous amount of space on my drive?

(Ghosthree3) #8

The fact that updating the packages is buggy is pretty garbage. Seriously how is this allowed.

The engine supports breaking down files where it is more granular. It’s just not what you do by default with the engine and it’s not what SD has done while developing the game. And changing it now would be a decent amount of dev work. It might be something that is done when they finally clean everything up and release the full game with, hopefully, a directory structure/file naming schema that is more in line with the game and not defautl UE3.

Well once they release the full game it’ll be less important because there will be less updates.

Eh, what I mean by release is a release where all the basic features are in and bugfixes are out the door. They will still be updating the game over time if they intend to keep making money with it. So there will still be constant updates. They just won’t be like the ones we got today.
