Maps we need!!!

(CoD4Fun) #1

We all know mapping takes time, ALOT OF TIME !!! The rate on which maps are released also nearly decreased to its minimum, with hardly a half way playable map 1/3 a year. Hardly a good map gets released in even a full year, which once was different. So, here are two ideas.

Idea 1: 3 chosen mappers form a group. All of these 3 mappers agree on a theme (for example summer, tank escort style map, objectives, story). Then all 3 chosen ones go ahead and create one single stage map on their own. The stage would need to be following the L-Shape principle. It must be a very close area, with a final objective, so that a team can enter the next area. The fact that you can focus on one area alone, automatically gives the map more detail, and is surely more fun for the mapper.

At the end we would have a map, and all ET players are happy ^^

Idea 2: maybe create a contest or something, like the one contest we had with the pictures or something. Someone needs to make a theme, then entries will be shown, and a 3 winners will be chosen, whose stage of the map, will be glued together with the other entires who won. Would probably also get the old grumbled mappers to open Radiant again. Just someone needs to make a theme, someone else like me, because i am not really accepted by community.

So what you think ? ^^

I think your first idea was better than the second one. The reason why I don’t think the second one would be liked by anyone is because I would definitely win. My recent idea is like travelling to a new dimension never realized before by the limitations of the human mind. But yeah, if you want to do it, that would be fine also.

I wish I could somehow help in this, I’m really motivated but my hands are tied by lack of knowledge. :frowning:

SD Mapping Group (short SDMG). Damn that would be cool! Never seen before. Was there actually at any time a group of members in a forum who joined together, forming an independend mapping group, wiht totally changing/flowing in membership, and with one chief on top (ME) ???

There have been multiple collaborations before.

Problem is then you are dependent on 3 people, say 1 stops then there goes all your work.
Second problem is mapping takes lots of time, the other contest was something you could do in an afternoon, a map can easily takes months. The next problem is that most mappers that are left are getting older - more responsibilities so they don’t have much free time left to map.

The last thing and the reason I don’t really map anymore is that it’s not worth it, the community is decreasing and most of the ones left don’t appreciate your work. As you said yourself the last “good” map was long ago, this doesn’t mean there haven’t been other maps, but they weren’t “good”. This maybe demotivated the mapper and he didn’t continue to develop his skills.

I find it mildly amusing that you support aaa4 in his statements that we’re all a bunch of skill less copy paste morons, yet now you are asking us for a new map.

aaa4 didn’t say you are all skill less copy paste morons :stuck_out_tongue: He just picked on the ones neccessary, and i am sure many people did appreciate his statements, because he spoke out, where all others simply would prefer taking a dollar to avoid getting [insert rude words here].

I also think, he was right with most what he said, so i still support the glorious aaa4. He was probably the hardest person ever hitting an internet forum

But enough of that 'n back to topic lol. Unfortunately you are right stealth with all your statements. I can not disagree anywhere.

Well, in the collaboration case aka idea 1, yes that would be a problem. However idea2 has the advantage that you must present something finished. Therfore you are only dependend on at least 3 entries hitting the stage. These, if only three, would then automatically be the winner and will be glued together. I think even that (with only three entries), that undergoing to create a contest would be a success.

I just had a 3rd idea. Probably you all know the principle of Hip Hop (ain’t Jazz similar ? I saw the film collateral, so all my knowledge on jazz relies on Tom Cruise words that all just improvise to create … something.) Why can’t that be similar with mapping. We need some base, something which forces people to adapt, like a beat. In mapping maybe a terrain, or streets or a basic layout. Then people start to freestyle and add prefab after prefab. Every prefab, and even if it is the most ugly, must stay. And at the end you would get a somewhat “random” map  I think that could be fun

and sorry i have bad english i know :frowning:

Sounds like a good idea. I can provide one of my old maps for a base upon which this could happen  => http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php/30918-MAP-Old-City-Rush

I wonder if anyone picked this map up btw O_O
