Mapping questions.

(iwound) #1

To consider moving to brink to make new levels i’d like to know just a few things about what is possible.

Will there be any natural ground textures or any way to incorporate them into a natural looking terrain. rather than just a platform.

ill add more later. but thats a pretty important one. feel free to add your own.

[]V[] i’m not sure to be honest.

I want to raise what I feel is an important point. How does Mapping/modding work with steam? I know my friends Crytiqal and Susefreak are interested in this particular area so I think its an important point to raise.

Will modding mapping still be possible or are we going to see the same with MW2 where the developer/publisher has all the control.

I don’t have the tech details []V[] so hopefully someone can answer both questions.

Doing a map with the actual infos about the gameplay (which are really poor) & The Arc design sounds like a bad idea to me …

Same as any other game.

Some mods (I’m not sure of the criteria) as also directly hosted on Steam and would appear as available free downloads if you own the main game. This would IMO be something awesome for Bethesda to get done with a pro-mod once a mature candidate is released.

I’d like to hear more from SD on the original question though. Nurturing the mapping community early, including giving them tools would be a smart move. Also integrating stuff like SDK/Map tools into Steam would be good so updates etc could be done. I just feel the shorter the lag between release and custom content the better.

i believe sd have said they are still commited to supporting the mod community, hopefully that doesn’t involve two tone suits and mopeds and it means us.

but jamieson can you elaborate or post links regarding this publisher control. i personnaly like to see more involvment from developers into custom. even if it’s just map competitions or other incentives.

my original question was to make clear what my options would be. as to what kind of levels i can create. if im stuck with no terrain it means i won’t be able to fulfil my ideas with brink and ill have to keep looking for some new tech to map on. unless im happy with some simple blended & small terrain patches. but atm it seems there is’nt much room for varied design [diplomatic ver]. just alternate rather than new levels which is more akin to quake. i dont expect this possibility but if it is available i would love to use this tech to create something.

Infinity Ward has all control over the servers in Modern Warfare 2 because there is no dedicated servers. This means they destroyed the modding community. They did it to make money which they have already done by realsing their own offical map packs which people have to pay for, I believe it was $15 for 3 maps, 1 of these was an old COD map.

Thats why I raised the point about modding and steam and how it works because I have no idea how modding/mapping works on steam or whether it was possible or how much control they would have over it.

I heard Rahdo say in an interview something about mapmakers may need some more background in modeling when designing maps for Brink, since everything in the level is modeled.

(tokamak) #8

Oh dear… Now let’s hope there’s some proper sketchup compatibility :stuck_out_tongue:

(Exedore) #9

I wouldn’t really say that’s the case. No modeling skill is required for designing maps, and with what is already available in the existing ones you could create a lot without adding any new models. Our level production pipeline has evolved significantly since that Rahdo quote.

Will there be any natural ground textures or any way to incorporate them into a natural looking terrain. rather than just a platform.

The ground in Container City is not flat.

<convenient link to last year’s gameplay vids>

thanks for the response. having looked at those vids again it seems the textures in the ground are quite varied and detailed.
i’ll look forward to finding out more about how these are created.

The editor is able to open old . world files I believe. ( jRad has mentioned that once )

From the looks of things, there are a crap ton of models available in the base game. Assuming they’re mostly modular (which I think would be a good assumption), it should be fairly easy to create new maps by just piecing models together.

Of course if you want to create something wholly new then you’re probably expected to be able to do all your own modeling and texturing. I don’t know how much of the official maps are blocked out using brushes though.
