Mapping contest by et-scene.de

6 weeks of mapping? I nearly map every day, so all my maps are made thrice as fast

(]UBC[ McNite) #22

The main problem is easy:
You don’t want to create new maps, cause my time is not enough yet - but you want to have an aim when u create a map (i hope)

That s not quite the main problem, and Iffy already described it completely: the main problem is that mapping for comp community mainly means lots of work, tons of whining (or no feedback at all), and no thus 0 reward/acknowledgement. All in all its the attitude that quite some senior mappers experienced while they were willing to do something for competition. And mix isn’t what gets you motivated.

Sidenote on my behalf: my conclusion is that i only map for the fun of building something cool, that i ll like to play.

(chosen) #23

Well, thats everything
Sure, you only make maps you like, but this doesn’t means others don’t like it - That’s why you are a mapper - You want to build up something for your own.

I’m no thalakos (or so) and i realy don’t care about him, he is just a stupid, incompetive whatver
If someone works for me, he know, that i’m avi on almost every time (if not on, msg at bnc and i’ll reply asap later in the next 12h). The same for swine.

What do you think, an admin hast to feel, when someone whines about his decision? If he publish only one point of view (i’ll do the same, if someone decides shit in my pov), but i don’t care about those comments, if it is a nice one, which shows more sides and more povs and why he is against my decision, i’ll message him, and i think, thats the same for mappers.
Also, you can find whine about admin decisions here, in this thread…

I know, how it feels if you do something, and one second later, after you did a n1 work for your own, noone is avi to check it or to say something about it.
For this, we have a team of 10 people, finish, german and esti natinal players and competive admins to review your map and to give you feedback, what would be better or what is not so good, or what we like best and what we think about the map and taxx on it.
If there is any stupid whine on xfire, who cares? the community decides the map, which is played, after the admin team collects 5 maps.
And why should they whine about it? why are you intrested in it? Why? (WHY :>)
Sure, its sometimes stupid if someone calls you a noob, for something you made over a long time, but if you know for yourself and if some others know around you, that you made a nice job, why are u interested in such stupid whine comments?

You may read those stupid comments, but there are people all over the world, who don’t understand you sometimes. (like u all now :>)

And again, if you’d like to submit a map, you already released in any country, and which is played wherever in a competition, come here and submit this map again, maybe with some fixes of known bugs or some own additions (cause u learn more).

If xfire.be gets online again, you can read everything again and maybe find some nice ideas for a map or for changes on your (old) map.

Hey,
nice idea and some well written posts.

I am one of the “younger” admins and my main goal was (with the #et-cup ) to bring the activity back to ET.
I will put the map also in our #et-cup (if the mapper agree ).

I think organizing cups / contests / and stuff is the best way to keep ET alive.
thx for your work chosen and thx to all the mappers ;D

(Ifurita) #25

Again, I commend chosen for his initiative, but this mapper (and I’ve done 6 maps aimed at the comp community, Vengeance_TE, Rommel_GA, Reactor, Dubrovnik, La Rochelle, and Decerto, for various leagues) has taught me, repeatedly that the comp community would really rather play Oasis, Goldrush, and Supply Depot ad nauseam.

How strongly do I believe this? La Rochelle is a map that is 90% completed. I’ve probably put 120 hours into the map, but I walked away from it, because I don’t think the extra 10 hours is time well spent. You can try to convince me that you (collectively) are open minded and are willing to commit to new maps, but given my experiences … I simply don’t believe it. As a result, I have tons of free time now \o/ and you guys are still playing Oasis, Goldrush, and Supply Depot, which a lot of people apparently want.

I really have tried to bite my tongue on this, but it needs to be said. I would appreciate it if this post was actually paid some attention, rather than glancing over it, as some of you have done with Blindside’s.

My league, WPL and my clan, nWo (www.newwandererorder.com) have playtested for mappers numerous times and have used many custom maps both in league play and our various pubs (league wide), though in 85% of the cases, we were the ones that were “taken advantage of” so to speak, the other 15% of mappers we dealt with were great and we’re now close friends with several.

When you want something playtested and are asked for a private playtest:

a)you make sure you give the map to the playtesters before you put it on etmaps.de and other sites like it.
b)don’t give it out to 10 clans and/or servers at a time.
c)either you recognize who participated in the playtesting helping you out in your readme file, or you make a map solely for them as compensation.
d)actually listen to suggestions and don’t go from a decent map to a subpar one with every new rendition.

I won’t mention names, but my clan has playtested for several different mappers and in the majority of cases, we were treated fairly poorly. It’s a two way street when it comes to playtests and hosts.

We would like to help you out, get your map on a bunch of servers, perhaps even put it in for league play. so that you can get the respect and notoriety that you deserve and your map can be hailed as a true piece of art. The problem comes when some mappers take advantage of this. I think there’s a lesson to be learned there.

P.S. I for one, despise Supply Depot and I know many who do. Let’s put the generalization to rest, shall we?

(EB) #27

[RANT]How did you get taken advantage of by the 85% ?
Did you not enjoy the half of an hour play testing each of the maps ?(compared to the hundred or more hours the mapper spent making it) …is that it ? (I find you’re complaint to be shallow.)

You obviously think that comparing any woes of ‘your opinion going to waste’ compares to the ‘hundred to several hundred hours spent designing the map’ ?
I see no comparison at all…You’re whining.[/RANT]

-Learn to make decent maps and then we’ll talk.

P.S. Rant fully over.

I know how to make decent maps, thanks. Do you? Missle X is anything but. Just because you can take some time out of your schedule to make tutorials, which I can find on just about any website out there (Bubba’s Castle for example), doesn’t mean you’re a good mapper.

People are whining in here about how clans and leagues don’t like to playtest and only like to play stock. That there work isn’t appreciated. My clan spent the better part of a month playtesting a single map for somebody, to get not even a thanks in return, with each passing rendition of this map, it’s become worse and worse. We’ve spent far too long going through 800 plus maps, debating the finer points of many of them and even taking the time and the effort to host them and introduce them to new people.

Mappers need playtesters, if you don’t, then stop complaining that nobody provided any feedback and nobody is playing the map you spent 100 plus hours on. Should all you want to do is complain, perhaps you should move on to greener pastures. I guess not all mappers can be like the Drakir’s,the gadler’s,the redrum’s and the UChronic’s, which is a damn shame, cause people like yourself make it very unpleasant to deal with others, when 8 times out of 10, you get jacksh^t in return other than time wasted.

It’s a two way street. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can stop b!tching and moaning about the state of customs and the state of ET.

Blindside?

(kamikazee) #30

He meant “B1indside”.

Seems both sides had not the luck to meet each other in a proper way yet… Lots of wretched feelings in here.

(blushing_bride) #31

It’s a great shame that not all clans have your attitude toward custom maps. If they did this discussion would not be taking place. Unforntunatly most other clans seem content playing stock maps and RTCW conversion. Nothing wrong with that it just means there is little point trying to make new maps for them.

Anyway i feel like ive had this same discussion regarding clans and custom maps about a million times. I think clanners have been spoilt for choice in the past and if they really are looking for something different then there is a large back catalogue of maps to choose from.

If any clan type peeps are interested im sure iffy or myself could compile a list of maps that were made for competition?

(EB) #32

::sigh::
@codename ty - Missle X was my first map…I made it within the first 4 weeks after I started using radiant. Grow up. -I’d like to see your first map product after 4 weeks. (most people still make rooms at 4 weeks)

Do You think you’re a bad man because you pick on my tutorials and skillset ? (helping others learn to map makes me feel good…and you’re picking on that ? what an a$$hole u r.)
I spent my time making things to help people learn rather than mapping what I wanted…and you think that is lame ?

Also: I severely dislike your attitude…you’re hastily spiteful. When someone disagrees…you lash out and then whine.

Not nice at all.

P.S. You even used my tutorials to learn to map…what a hippocrit !!!

(Ifurita) #33

Agreed with B_B. Personally, I haven’t lacked for playtesters. I’ve found many clans and servers willing to play test maps and provide feedback. I’ve had moderate luck quite a few leages with getting maps played in preseason However, that seems to carry little weight with the comp community as a whole. Time after time, when offered the opportunity to adopt new maps, in matches that count (e.g., regular season) or stay with Goldrush-Supply Depot-Radar-Oasis, guess what they go back to? The GameArena league in Australia offers a choice of 12 maps organized in 3 dropdowns. Teams can offer maps based on dropdowns. Guess what 3 maps get played 75% of the time?

(Codename Ty) #34

I used Bubba’s and Drakir’s sites to learn, not anything you did. I looked at your stuff to see if they were anything that might further help out our aspiring mappers (we have a team of 10). It turned out that it was more or less what was at Bubba’s Castle, and what could be found in Vids from 3dbuzz.com, nothing more than that. Should anyone still be making single rooms after 4 weeks of mapping, perhaps it’s not for them and they should find another hobby.

I’m merely stating facts, you’re the one who is lashing out and attacking me, along with your incessant whining and you are jumping the gun when you don’t know the facts. This is my last post in regards to your flames. Please, grow up.

Aha, missed that name when I scrolled up to look at previous posts

@Ifurita: Basing the whole community on your experiences with an Austrailian league doesn’t seem to make much sense to me.

@blushing_bride: Thanks for the offer of making the list. We already have one. We have several maps that with a few tweaks here and there would be perfect for competition and others that we have adopted for 7v7 comp play (i.e. St. Nazaire). We’re mostly running customs during preseason, reg season and playoffs, with a few stock or rtcw conversions every once in awhile, but by no means making up the bulk, as in some other leagues.

We have over 200 maps reviewed within our forums and another couple hundred at a couple clan sites which are members. We know which ones are made for comp and which ones we would like to adopt, it’s just a matter of getting ahold of the mappers for them to either help us out or to give us permission to do it ourselves. Thanks for the offer though.

I enjoyed both townsquare and summer palace btw, though wish there had been a bigger pub version of the palace a lot of places I would have liked to have explored that were blocked off.

We would be happy to participate in playtests and would love to have some more mappers willing to help out creating some maps for our league and/or clan.

(kamikazee) #37

You say you got lots of test results there.
Some here waited for replies that never came. (IIRC Marko complained about this in some topic about El Kef on this forum. Post: is here)

Seems we’ve got 2 isolated communities clashing here. Instead of having a discussion going on, we’d better team up the results.

Let’s not fight for the same game, it’s made for fun.

(Ifurita) #38

@Ifurita: Basing the whole community on your experiences with an Austrailian league doesn’t seem to make much sense to me.

Give me a little more credit than that. My observations are based on 5+ seasons (since 2003) working with MGL (Australia), GA (Australia), TWL (North America), CAL (North America), Clanbase (Europe), and several other smaller cups and leagues. In addition, I’ve actively participated in mapping/feedback/adoption discussions across the same 3 continents in nearly all of their forums, including ETnation, Xfire, ET-center, and Splash Damage. My experiences are hardly based off of one Australian league. I was going to try to stay out of the mud, but next time please check your facts.

If you think I’m an isolated case, I suggest you hit up other mappers who have tried to support the comp community: Blushing Bride (Cathedral, Townsquare), Marko (El Kef), RivrStyx (SW_Oasis, SW_Goldrush), McNite (River), Detox (BeerRun), Brevik (Braundorf and Rochelle), and a bunch of others. We talk back and forth quite often, and I don’t think you’ll find that I’m that far off base.

(Codename Ty) #39

No offense Ifurita, but I’ve been playing custom maps in the WPL (primarily customs), STA and TWL leagues for the past two seasons, so I’m not sure where you’re coming from. ~shrugs~

@kamikazee, He’s been letting anger cloud his judgements…I forgive him, even his insults.

@ codename ty,
Would you like for me to let you get the last word in ?..go ahead. Just keep the insults to a minimum if you could.
