Mandatory tutorial

It’s simple as it sounds, make the tutorial something that must be done if you want to play matches with people. I’m really sick of typing all the time in the game’s team chat what medics/fire supports should do.

I’m sure you’ve all been in this situation: You’re down, the timer for respawn is ticking and you see in your vicinity 2-3 medics who are all in the 15m range of your downed body. One would hope that the sheer amount of medics is a guarantee enough that you’ll be on your feet in no time… Well, you’ve never been more wrong in your life, medics just strafe left to right hoping to see another enemy player while you furiously spam “V 2 1” to no avail.

Same goes with fire supports. I can’t tell you how many times I shot them in the face/ slashed them with a knife / jump in front of them, hoping for that miraculous ammo box, but the ammo was ever so elusive, so I ran to the ammo box and died behind enemy lines :s

On a side note, add more features to the tutorial, add some kind of engineer phase for first timers.
Make a shooting range filled with all the weapons so you can run up to them and test them, same goes for the abilities. I know there are commands that you can try out but that’s too tiresome, and confusing to some players.

It’s been discussed quite a few times, sadly… I’m not sure it’s really on their radar right now though. However, what they have said is that once the core experience (ie. all the mercs, maps and game-modes) are complete and released, they will amend the current tutorial and improve upon it to go into more depth about game mechanics - such as covering the different class roles, and things like that. Hopefully this won’t be TOO far in the future… :s

This has been suggested before. You can’t force people to learn.

You can force people to do things but they won’t retain the info if they don’t want to.

Some people resent being forced to do things and will disregard any helpful information given to them.

Thanks for the response, and for the info. I didn’t search that much just typed a few words and I saw that there wasn’t a thread, if there is one that discusses things that I wrote about, just hand the link and close this one down.

Well I wasn’t being disrespectful I asked time and time again for aid be it healing or ammo, but people don’t seem to care, if you want to kill people just take the assault classes and I’ll switch to medic/fire support, no need to hog spaces with medics/fire supports who don’t know what their job is on the battlefield

You’re welcome - and it’s ok, it’s a valid topic. A lot of the other discussions are old, so this one is fine to remain open for anyone who wishes to add further to the discussion. ^.^

A quick search for “tutorial” in the search bar shows some of the past discussions regarding it, but they are a little all over the place. But if you are looking for more info on it, might be a good place to start. :3

I think there’s a bit of not so pleasant cross over where some people will get really snarky about not getting revived to the people who are playing the medics. Tactical awareness doesn’t come easy to everyone, but I understand when you get downed right behind/beside a medic and they just don’t even notice you that it’s super frustrating. I think for most people, they’ll get better with practice, but tunnel vision hits home pretty hard at times.

That said, I don’t think forcing the tutorial is always going to help. A lot of the new players who are trying out phoenix right now know full well what defibs do and how they work, but they’re not at all smooth when using them = they’ll miss, or just be slow, etc.

It’s annoying when you just want to get a few good games in one evening, but practice is what they need. Part of me thinks forcing new players through the rank 1-5 servers before they can join general population servers would be nice, but that has it’s own set of problems.

Once a level 8 medic walked past me.

A level 8. EIGHT. Like really?

At least he apologised on the mic.

Hey look at the bright side. Since you had to wait the timer out you got to come back with some ammo, lol.

So people disregard any helpful information either out of arrogance, stupidity, or both.

The entire tutorial needs to be reworked before even thinking about making it mandatory. It teaches very little even with the featured mercs. Fire Support is only taught how to use their ammo ability and completely skips out on air support. The tutorial on movement is painfully inadequate only teaching the very basics of the basics ignoring not just long jumps (also known as c-jumps) but also wall jumps.

As far as i can tell people that actually do support and give out medpacks/ammo/revives are like gods.
I can count on 1 hand the legit support players that actually played their role well (in pubs, comp is just a tad better). I always take 1 med, 1 engineer and 1 assault with me so i can fill in missing roles. That way i can say i have decent experience in everything regarding db.

And then i see people with lvl 12 having 2 medic and skyhammer and just go on a fragspree, ignoring the objectives and complaining at the end that we lost because the team sucked . . . Funny thing is its always the ones that obiously don’t know what db is about that are complaining. Rarely do i see a good player that carries the team shittalking.

BTT
A more indept Tutorial would help db a lot because newcomers still don’t perceive the uniqueness of the game and just see it as another shooter.
But instead of forcing it i would suggest a Training room coupled with the option of trying out every merc availlable. Since a lot of people are reluctant to buy mercs without trying them first, it forces them indirectly to do the training and learn more about the game. the repeat process for every merc might be annoying but repetition might help those ignorant reviverebels and ammodeniers that they are doing something wrong and can do better.
