Making rounded ends for cylinder

(yobiko) #1

Is it possible to round of the end of a cylinder? Trying to make a fueltank and it would look better with rounded ends

Select your cylinder, and choose curve|cap selection

Then vertex edit the end caps.

(yobiko) #3

Hmm nothing happened when I did that.

(SCDS_reyalP) #4

Did you make your cylinder from the curve menu ?

(yobiko) #5

Nope, I used the polygons thing in the toolbar. Tried the cylinder from curve and cap and now it worked, though its not really what I had in mind, and the polygontool generates a completely round cylinder, while cylinder dont.

Heres what I want to do:

Actually, neither will be completely round, but the things from the curve menu will usually look better in game. They are made for curved surfaces. If a simple capped cylinder isn’t close enough to what you want, vertex edit one or more cylinders and cap the final one.

If you REALLY want to use a brush polygon (not something I would suggest), you could use the clipper tool to cut bits off the end until it looked round enough. You could also use ‘cone’ from the brush menu, with the number of sides matche to your cylinder.

Another option would be to make a 3d model in another program and export it to .ase or .md3.

Hm.
You dont happen to know a program that can export to .ase or .md3? Using lightwave and I’m not sure if it can do that.
And how do I import .ase and .md3? import in file meny only show .map and .xmap as selectable formats

There’s definitely an .md3 exporter for LW, I thought there was an .ase exporter too but I’m not sure. Keep hitting Google until it gives you a useful answer.

i had a quick question. i was making some cylindrical railings, well attempting to earlier, and for them to be realistically sized they obviously have to be fairly small. now, when radiant would generate cylinders from small brushes, they were more like the same brush except tilted on an axis into a diamond. is this just how it looks in the editor? does it appear round in the game? haven’t really tried it before, with small cylinders, just curious.

You would place it as a misc_model entity. You would then have to make it solid with clip brushes, or use autoclipping (which i don’t recally the entity key for offhand)

Small cylinders (from the curve menu) look square or diamond in radiant, but should look better in game.
