Making Phantom More of the Recon He Is Meant to Be

(jjpdn) #1

Ok, the only problem I see with Phantom is the fact that he is less of a team player, and more of a team disruptor. That is perfectly alright in a team based game in my opinion, but it would be great if he could fill in both roles.

So, this is what I suggest:
Any enemy within a small radius of him and the one he is looking at while he’s invisible becomes detected.

This is both a buff and a nerf. Now, all weak mercs have a slight warning before been knifed (if they can differentiate between a IR, Heartbeat, SNITCH and this detection), but Phantom helps a lot more his team.

I’m also imagining Phantom who can “tell” his teammates who to finish off by getting close to his target, Katanaying the Rhino and then having his team covering him with bullets.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: As Anon0mis1000 has pointed out, yes, Phantom is actually classified as a Recon Operative, NOT Assault.
“A powerful recon operative”, from the Official Wiki page.

I think giving him an ability to just send out a simple ping like the heart beat sensor would help alot. He needs to have some sporting ability because otherwise he isn’t really recon. Hell, even his character is built to be more assault. He’s narcissistic, even more so than any of the other mercs. Why would he be a team player?

The spy in TF2 is such a simple class, generally only capable of taking out one person from behind then fleeing the scene as the enemy team realises. He offers no help to the team in terms of what you’re saying, much like phantom. This kind of re-work is perhaps too much of a drastic change, but I always saw phantom as a merc that could take out a core enemy merc quickly and really jeopardise the enemy push (i.e take out the enemy Medic).

This, spotting is already absurd in this game+small player numbers. Would love Phantom as an Assassin that has to be countered by a team, not just backpedal+shoot. A dangerous, deadly, elusive…well, Phantom.

His role should be like Fragger or Nader: killing people. But while Fragger and Nader are head-on fighters that engage multiple people, Phantom should be a precise scalpel. Fast, deadly, elusive but once found very, very easy to kill and easy to counter if you do your f-in job aka play as a team

Except he’s classed as RECON, not ASSAULT.

He’s like a shark. On land. Helpless and eventually dead.
Seriously though, there were so many suggestions regarding Phantom ignored by devs, that I’m amazed you are still trying. All the while simple reverting him to original state (without spinning bug, obviously) would suffice for now.

I dunno if they should completely revert him to his original state. And don’t get me wrong. I LOOOOVE Phantom. He’s my 2nd favorite merc, but I remember when he came out he was an absolute nightmare to deal with what with his 120hp plus a cloak that could tank airstrikes and sniper shots without eating into his health. Not to mention he benefited greatly from the old melee mechanics. I think maybe just buffing his speed to match Fletcher is fine. Its only 10 more speed if I’m not mistaken but look at how much more mobile Fletcher is. Also maybe make his cloak last longer and make it a bit less visible/noisy. I’m kind of on the fence on a spotting ability, since we already have 3 mercs that can spot, but I’m not against the idea. I have heard many good ones. I guess its complicated since Phantom is such a unique character and invisibility is inherently hard to balance, especially in a fast paced game like DB. I just hope the devs show Phantom some love soon!

Again with the comparisons to the TF2 Spy! If you think that the TF2 Spy and Phantom are similar, just wait until you see Zer0 from the Borderlands series.
