I want to put many trees in my map but the SD trees have way too many tris on them and they kill performance. So I need to make some trees that look the look but are fairly simple and with few brushes. If anyone knows any good tree making tutorials or has some nice prefabs that they don’t mind sharing it would help a lot.
Making good looking but efficient trees
I’ve been trying to think of a system for years to create nice trees, but I’m still not there. that was more of an algorithmic excercise though, but u can expect some tree prefabs from me soon, I’ve got plans to do some (static not algorithmically generated) i find it really annoying that all the trees i plant with the tree planter seem to be walkable thru, even the trunk. I mentioned this on the thread about trying to make a sound for walking thru trees. as for the prefabs i’m going to be doing i’ll try and upload them to www.et-mapping.tk or we can use ftp or msn or something
To fix the walk-thru problem with the trees, open up the textures/common and find the clip_weapon and create a brush about the same size as the trunk and there you have it.

Any progress with the prefab? I would be interested in decent tree prefabs. Specially I would have a decent alpha leaf texture that would represent the one branch.
I don’t know if any of you has played Morrowind but that game had some good looking trees. Granted those trees were models…and their trunks and branches had about a million brushes in them but they had a good look. There’s some trees like that also in this thread

I think if properly made that type of design would be the best looking one and most efficient one. I think I saw that design in Unreal tournament too but I’m not sure. Plus making that design would require some expert made alpha textures.
