I’m not completely against this, but making the game ranked only would cause other issues. For example, players who try new mercs would underperform, and still create unbalanced games. And the “good” players can’t play when they have a bad day, because they are expected to perform well… what if I just want to slice shit with my katana, and pick Phantom? (especially when I’m drunk)
In a free to play game this would lead to everyone creating smurf accounts.
Food for thought: in Paladins (an other character based FPS) you can only play via matchmaking, but the MM in casual mode is not much better than a completely random system - you get games where one team doesn’t have a healer, while the other does, so the winner is basically decided by picking - but you gain/lose ELO because of your random teammates.
Guess what the players do to avoid this? Play the 2 beta maps without textures over and over, instead of the numerous fully designed maps, because you can **** around without consequences in the test queue. Yes, you read it right, the thest queue is more popular than the regular game mode, which is still more popular than the “competitive” mode.
On a side note, test map games are obviously less balanced than the regular matchmaking, but nobody seems to care, as long they don’t lose ranks.
So it looks like the casual game is the competitive now, and the test queue is the casual mode.
Another off-game example is TF2. I surely enjoyed trying hard to win, and carrying my team with soldier or scout, but the most fun I’ve had was playing demoknight on Valve servers.
SD is working on casual matchmaking though, and they promised that the server browser won’t go anywhere, so you’ll have the ranked, the casual matchmaking, and the “ultra casual” server browser. In íour case, you’ll be able to stick to casual matchmaking.
P.S. sorry about the long post, but match balance/fun games is a topic that has a special place in my heart <3
