LulzSec set sights on Brink?
Seriously, i hope they havent stolen the Passwords Database, if so then im gonna give up…

i’ve already been done over by sony, and i dont fancy being done over by SD, i know its not their fault but damn :.
I’ve been done over by Sony, Epic and Codemasters. One more aint gonna matter now.

(Sanch3z) #22

dont get it, what is this about? what is Lulzsec?

(Miken420) #23

Are these the guys that hacked the PSN?

(pinion120) #24

I’m actually kind of excited about this. In my nerd fantasy, Lulz sec has gotten its hands on some internal e-mails between Splash Damage and Bethesda. Imagine, SD pleading with Bethesda to not release yet so they can polish the game. Bethesda boss angrily says “NO! Foolish game developer, we must rape and pillage the customer and our numbers show to make the most sales we release NOW!” In this fantasy there may or may not be pics or video footage of Bethesda actually whipping splash damage employees to release the game immediately. Wait, that sounded wrong. :stuck_out_tongue:

IN ANY EVENT - that’d be ****ing awesome eh.

Say your prayers, Brink users.

:stroggtapir:

(artemis) #26

The fact that they state ‘Brink users’ suggests it may be something server side? Something that is preventing people connecting or playing. I am a little concerned as, despite Brink being buggy and a little less populated, I’ve had some fun playing it.

(pinion120) #27

I honestly interpreted it as “your prayers are going to be answered” but perhaps they are just gonna be dicks and drop some servers. Either way, the internet is the internet. Let’s hope it is something cool like internal e-mail releases until it happens. :stuck_out_tongue:

(Om3ga) #28

****ing hackers!

(Krallis) #29

Do you honestly believe that would help.
It would do more damage that it would be worth, they’d have to stop working on the DLC and stuff while they solved the security breaches.

(Overgear) #30

These lulzsec are pretty internet tough guys.

(pinion120) #31

Don’t think it would help, do think it would possibly offer transparency and maybe vindicate Splash Damage some if they were strong armed. So in a sense, yes it would help restore their reputation.

(Krallis) #32

But it would in no way help the state of the game.
It would damage it as SD wouldnt be able to fix it or work on it as they would have to fix the security leak first.

No they would have to hire a better 3rd party security team… do you really think they, or any company for that matter, provide their own security?

Even if they do work on it themselves there’s a good chance that it’s not somebody who works on the game.

(Cynix) #34

All they want is attention (which, btw, you actually gave them by posting this topic), so attacking a game like Brink would be pretty pointless. At any rate, what exactly would they compromise that would have any meaningful impact on the game? Personal information / authentication details are only handled by Valve/Steam. They could try to compromise Steam, but I suspect it would be as futile as their attempt to DDOS Amazon.

(Krallis) #35

They could wreck the servers which would ruin the online component.

(Haragorn) #36

We need more engineers!

(Floris) #37

If they had access to the the database they might as well have had access to the salt, making the process of retrieving your password just a tiny step harder, if they used a salt.

(Cynix) #38

How exactly could they “wreck” the servers?

The game servers are geographically distributed and independently operated. This group isn’t big enough, organized enough, or smart enough to launch a DDOS attack against even a noticeable percentage of the game servers.

I might be wrong, but I believe that the master server is handled by Valve/Steam. I’m 100% sure that Valve has faced threats from script kiddies in the past and are prepared to deal with anything that this group could throw at them. Valve also has massive bandwidth available that would make any DDOS attack against a Steam server virtually impossible.

They could flood the servers with trolls, but that would require every troll to first buy the game. Honestly, if they want to fork over $50 for the game and then spend a few hours trolling it I am 100% fine with that. It just means more money for SD.

The only possibility I can see would be an exploit in the game server code that they have somehow managed to find that would allow them to remotely shut down the game server, and again, I doubt they are smart enough to find something like that.

If they had access to the the database they might as well have had access to the salt, making the process of retrieving your password just a tiny step harder, if they used a salt.

Yes, well the point of the salt is to counteract rainbow tables and pretty much nothing else. The difference between brute forcing and doing a lookup against a rainbow table is a bit more than a “tiny step”.
Well there are netvars. But yea you’re probably right if it was to affect servers it would just be a glitch to shut them down.

Although I would not say they aren’t smart enough. Since that is a challenging statement and crackers and hackers generally like challenges or they wouldn’t have shown an interest in their respective hobbies. Not to mention you are just speculating and even then… no good would come from a statement like that. At best it would just taunt somebody without the ability to prove you wrong.

“Big lulz coming up in the near future. Time to show these bitches how it’s done. #Brink #Bethesda #ZeniMax http://t.co/St9EPzn

My guess is PC gamers are safe, and that console gamers are at risk.
