Long loading times between maps

(Mustang) #1

Just wondering if anyone could elaborate on this a little more.

By which I mean is there anything I could do my end to speed things up?
Ashog always seems to load significantly faster than me and he mentioned he’s running an SSD, whereas I am not.

For example is it a 60% hardware issue (SSD vs HDD), 30% unoptimised game files, 10% luck. Or 10% hardware, 70% game, 20% luck. Or something else?

Meiling’s comment seems to be suggesting it’s more of a game issue, whereas my observations so far is that it could be more related to hardware.

People still use normal hard drives?

(Volcano) #3

i load in after about 40 seconds on my ssd, which is slower than the older patches

(Bangtastic) #4

this is not only a hardware issue -.-

Between maps loading takes like 5 times longer. When I connect to the server it takes like 10 seconds. Between maps around 50 seconds.

Going to get my stopwatch out tonight and see what the actual time I get is.

The patch prior to the 25th of April had the fastest loading time for me. Only took ~15 seconds or so.

This is not true that I load fast. It happens sometimes, but very seldom. Mostly I have to stare at my screen for 30 seconds or so to load a map. So I also have long loading times, wanted even to post a bug thread or something.

It seems to be a general thing for everyone, what I wonder however if this is connected somehow to map change crashes being fixed lately.
Perhaps it’s a pay-off for a workaround that fixed map crashes?

This is exactly what it is. I think it was Anti that said that map load time will increase, but there should be less crashes. Ultimately to be optimized of course.

So there are a couple of things happening here.

  1. We moved when character data is loaded in so that as much of it as possible happens before the loading screen ends. That’s why there are less blue men running around but the loading screen is displayed for longer than it used to be.

  2. All of our data is currently split up into small packages which makes it easier for the development team to work in parallel. Unfortunately the more packages there are the more seeking hard drives have to do. Most games try and ship with all the packages folded together so they can be streamed into RAM faster. With the data still changing a lot as we polish maps and characters it’s a bit early for us to fold those packages together but as the content starts to get locked down during Beta we’ll be able to start optimising the way it loads.

This is also the reason why SSD performs better than HDD in Dirty Bomb as there are no physical parts that need to seek between each individual package.

+rep for MrEd

Thanks for the detailed info’s.

Yeah thanks

Loading times are way shorter than Brink. So that’s a good thing.
