Long Jump Bind not Working

also @Amerika its probaly just people spamming the spacebar instead of the longjump bind when they get attacked, i kinda do that as well sometimes. really helps :stuck_out_tongue:

This seems to be one of the few occasions where I disagree with you but my personal rule of thumb is that of something is so trivial that it can be easily automated, it should be. I always hated “gameplay” that treats you like a monkey pressing a button to get a banana. There’s nothing interesting to “learn” here. It’s just wasting your time with programming your muscle memory and not really improving any skill of note.

DB does a great job at automatizing many trivial things, especially concerning communication. For example mercs groan when hit, scream when downed, thank the medic when revived and shout “cover me!” when repairing. In many other games you’d have to assign keys for that or pollute the voice chat with trivial information.

This is part of what makes DB so enjoyable for me: you can focus on the really interesting, non trivial things like tactics and teamwork. There’s no macro for that.

Adding a standard key bind in the options menu for long jumps always would have seemed obvious to me.

Learning to strafe jump isn’t hard in Quake 3. But learning to go from zero speed to max speed instantly under pressure and consistently do it in a way that made you elusive but didn’t screw your aim was a skill you only learned over time after burning it into muscle memory and knowledge. Long jumping isn’t quite the same thing but it is part of the mechanics of DB. It’s a basic mechanic that everyone is supposed to learn yet people bypass this with a bind to make the game easier for them. Hitting a long jump consistently under pressure can be hard to do. And, again, people are bypassing that…and many of them pick up bad habits because of it. IMO it’s not a trivial thing…it’s an integral part of the base game.

I’m OK with the bind existing but I just don’t respect it’s use at it currently stands. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect the people who use it…they have their reasons. But I’d be perfectly OK with it being removed from DB just as I’d be OK with adding it to the options menu for everyone to use.

If long jumping is so easy then how does it take away from the enjoyable parts? I’m confused by that statement.

I said it’s trivial (meaning in an annoying way), not easy. Without the bind I regularly managed to get the long jump wrong due getting lost on the keyboard or messing up the timing ever so slightly. Maybe I’m just to involved with UX people but every time I mess something up with computers I check if improving the UI can fix it and it that case - voila, here’s a nifty keybind, autoexec.cfg here I come.

I can see your point though for maxing out the speed in Quake 3, which AFAIU requires a comparable long sequence of moves and keys pressed to get right and also needs to consider the environment.

That’s exactly my point. Long jumps are a skill in the game you’re supposed to learn. It’s part of the skill ceiling. How/when to use them and using them consistently under pressure is a key part to managing your character. If it wasn’t for mechanics like that, jumping off walls, strafe jumping in Q3 and similar movement features all of us would only be pressing our forward key at all times with no variation. And it would be pretty boring.

So when yo automate long jumping you’re intentionally bypassing a key part of the game as I see it. I don’t consider it a huge deal and I’m not against people using it to the point of calling for it’s removal outright. But, as I said, I have zero respect for it and I wouldn’t be unhappy if the bind got removed from the game. Or have the devs add in a bind for it in the settings if they want to embrace it. I’d be fine with that too. But, as the game currently stands, I’m not a fan of it’s use.

Skillful movement under pressure is a huge part of a good game for myself.

what about people like me that longjumped for 200 hours minimum and then decided to make a bind for it?

fun fact: i found out about longjumping by accident, as it was never mentioned in any tuturial in 2015.

(RyePanda) #27

I used to do long jumps without a bind but having a long jump bind means I don’t have to move a finger to crouch, and can instead keep it on d (I use WASD with C as crouch).
I should probably change that but… eh
(Szakalot) #28

it would definitely be nice to add it to the settings. removing it is far too much ban police, but as it currently stands, the bind gives a tiny advantage for those who are willing and have the know how to fiddle with .cfg files, separating the playerbase unnecessarily

same

they could add that to the tutorial

you can also do it with console commands like CSGO, and since its only longjumping, which isnt that hard to do i dont think it makes that much of a difference/seperates the playerbase.

They did with the assault course
