Load of Questions about the Code

(Captain_Kill) #1

Hey all! I got some fat question here and i hope i can get some decent answers in return!

Before i start i need to say a few things. The mod i’m working on is single player. Now you are all probably wondering WTF am i using a multiplayer engine for??? The reason is simple: The technology. It is by far THE best free engine (that i know how to use) and is based of an engine (quake 3) that i already have some pretty substancial coding experience with. By using ET i hope to create a better game than what i normally would be able to make.

Now for the questions!!

  1. How does ET’s camera and scripting system work?? Is it like RTCW’s system or is it something different altogether? Am i right in asuming that if i learn one i know the other? My mod will have extensive cinematics and movies so this is a really important part of the engine to me.

  2. How hard/easy would it be to take what is now a MP game and convert it into a SP game? eg. remove respawing, remove warmups, take out the limbo/spectator system, add in savegame support + fix/add whatever needs to be fixed/added

  3. What would be the best way to add lots of enemies to the game? traditional q3 client system? or more like q2’s? (which allowed for more monsters at the expense of their intelligence :D)

  4. Any date on when the tools for the player models will be released? My mod has a deadline of April 30th THIS YEAR.

  5. I’ve got akimbo weapons worked out pretty well but the firing anims are buggered. When rapid fire guns are fired the anims are screwed up in one hand but fine in the other and i’m not sure why. I REALLY want to get this worked out. I’m not sure if it’s code related or todo with the character animations themselves.

Thanks for any help!

PS. If you need any code just tell me and i’ll be happy to upload the whole source somewhere.

So I’m a total noob in programming especially Q3 engined games I think I can not help you very much.
But a little remark to point 5.):
There are already akimbo pistols in ET.

#2. It shouldn’t be too hard since there’s already a lot of SP code in the game. There’s even samegame/loadgame code in the game (g_save.c).

I already know the game has akimbo pistols  infact, my game already has akimbo M16s, it’s just the firing anims are stuffed and i thought somone might know why. I also know about the savegame code but i tried to set it up and got a couple of hundred errors… I was hoping someone else may have got it working

The camera system? Same as Q3/RTCW. The scripting system too is just a slightly different variant to RTCWs.

As stated above, some SP code is left in the game, consider’d or tried messing about or seeing whats there? Have a look, keep note of whats there and what isnt and make a list of what your going to work around.

Nfi. Q3 bot code maybe? Contact [RW] (I think) peeps from this forum ([RW]Tiger) as I know theyve coded bots. (or Bludd  )

Good luck with this. :]

No idea. Let peeps see the code? Use

Insert code here[close /code].

HAHA! I don’t think posting all the necessary code would be a good use of forum space :D… I’ll see what i can do about uploading it somewhere

Q3 didn’t have a camera system  I’m talkin about the camera that’s used for the cineractive stuff in RTCW SP. So i could theoretically use RTCW scripts and they’d work? I guess i could just whip up a level and try it out… Wouldn’t take too long and would be the best way of testing stuff. I hope it works, otherwise it’ll mean one more thing to re-write.

Oh yeah, 'cause my game is SP i need to handle AI in a totally different way to how ET does it at the moment. At the moment it uses typical Q3 style MP AI but i need AI that’s more like the SP AI in RTCW, eg. scripting, spawning where i want them to spawn etc… MP AI is just too random, I need more control!

PLEASE if someone from Splash Damage is reading this could you PLEASE post some answers here?? I REALLY want to get these things confirmed by the people who made the game  No offence to those who’ve already helped out.

Thanks again for the help.
