Linux: mapping

(Dementia) #1

Hello,

I'm almost entirely new to mapping for any sort of game and haven't ever attempted.

I post, with hope that I might have a few simple questions answered.

-Is it at all possible to map exclusively on a linux machine?

-Sure, I know I could just use gtkRadiant, as the developers provide a linux binary. However, are there alternatives for applications such as EasyGen?

-I suppose that I’ll have to compile within gtkRadiant as my other choices don’t appear to be possible with Linux (Q3Map, wolf compile). Or, can I not simply convert a .bat to a shell script?

Thanks for your time.

-Mark

GtK-Radiant compiles with Q3map2. And there is a Linux binary for Q3map2, and why the hell would you want to use EasyGen? (Easygen may be able to work with Wine or something similar.)

You replied:

Obviously I’m uninformed. This is the part where you try to asnwer my question.

Did you miss that part of my post? Did I state that I wanted to use EasyGen?

I’m asking what applications are necessary. Because I, myself, do not know.

Get it? Thanks for your time.

q3map2 and gtkradiant are all you really need to make maps. Easygen is only avialable on windows (although it might work under wine), but you can use gensurf (a radiant plugin included with radiant 1.4) or fate http://www.vis.uni-stuttgart.de/~rose/stuff/fate/ for terrain.

If you want to make your own assets (models, textures, sounds) you will need to find tools to work with those files. There are linux tools for all those things.

You’ve been very helpful SCDS_reyalP, thank you. That’s exactly the response I was looking for.

May I add that Radiant 1.4 is the “suggested” version at this point in time as 1.5 is not nearly finished.

(Dementia) #7

I’m aware. I’m using the 1.4.0 build.

Dementia, as you are just starting out in mapping it might be a bit early for you however EB has some excellent tutorial maps on the www.spicejuice.com site. These will come in handy as you learn mapping.

All my mapping is done using Linux.

GtkGensurf is a good tool but search these forums for FATE.

It’s WAY better than EasyGen and runs under both Windows and Linux.
