Linux deditcaded server

(SpawnTDK) #1

hello there,

i’ve searched the web but i found no info about it, so please tell me if i missed something.

i’ve got enough hardware running to host a few servers, but i can’t find anything about linux server binarys or even windows server bins.
(but i’m not retarded enough to host windows machines anyways :penguin:, so linux please)

beware! random rant:

when it comes down to linux binarys for db, i kinda feel reminded of the how they handled this matter in brink.
because of etqw splash has a hardcore fanbase, small but presistent, but a few aspects of the etqw “success” (small one) get ignored - yes ignored, hardly to no word about it: custom servers and custom maps.

i’ve found a few dev posts back from 2012/13 on this, but they aint worth a **** as it shows.

not sure if albert realy said that, i guess not.

i realy miss the days with id software around, they did a lot of good things bevor bethesda ****ed them up.

I’m pretty sure we will never have our own servers. I dont think we wont be able to rent official servers from Nexon. We will have to deal with the servers we currently have.

i guess so too, splashs sad state of the art. just revisited the old brink linux threads, never a word about it, now there isnt even a word about win servers.

sad thing is: they don’t get the fact that hardcore gamers and clans demand their own machines, it’s a major part building up a strong community basis, even it isn’t that big, still it’s something every publisher should know, at least the old ones did. (still hosting q2 and q3 servers btw.)
by ignoring this fact the gaming community spreads over thousands of games and pushing up idie studios, well, thats not a bad thing and brings some good games with the os support we want.

ignoring linux for gaming server has become somewhat usual in the past - at least by the older publishers/devs (yes reakktor, i point at you and toxikk servers). at this point i start to question intelligence.
i know both worlds, but when it comes down to servers, i still see thin air for windows, powershell and win2012 hasn’t changed that. for casual user workstations windows is perfect.
but thats what the community gets, when agreed to “publisher only hosting” back in the days with all those cod and bf crap games.

renting a server from nexon wouldn’t be an option anyways, so idc because leaving hosting to a 3rd party isn’t worth a dime.

Are Linux servers all that great? I’m unsure…

(SpawnTDK) #5

ofc - my personal opinion.
the biggest part of root/vm servers is running linux or bsd for a reason - not only because its cheap - flexability, excellent debugging capabilitys, the ability to pass extended rights to every child process (the win uac drama, good for some basic security, bad for handling stuff at times), resource saving, good repositorys on the major distros, i can open (log)files with a few gb without making the system sweat, regex support, iptables/pf, no registry, kvm support on kernel side - making virtual machines fast as hell (no client sided vmware/virtualbox bloatware) and so on - everything i miss when working with windows machines.
the only thing i miss on linux clients at times is notepad++, superior all in one ui-editor, but won’t help on the shell anyways.

Do any f2p games that allow in-game grinding for currency to purchase items have linux binaries available to run your own server? I don’t think they do for some obvious reasons, so I don’t see how this is SD’s sad state

(SpawnTDK) #7

and where exactly is the problem with running an own server when the game itself doesn’t change? you still need to buy the mercs and stuff. because a gameserver shouldn’t handle the accounting in this case.

it’s not some random f2p mmo with a few big servers and some guilds working on game domination.
it’s a shooter - better said: it should be a shooter with clans who want to frag others for fun. and if i want to fight a clanwar, i just go onto my server, kick all noobs and let only the right people enter.
also i see no real regular servers to play on, like we did in the older sd games, with active server admins (who can make space for mates - ?lulu? is love) and a server community. db right now is just hitting random people - no real community feeling. you aren’t even able to join server with your premade group, because all server with a useable ping are full or don’t have enough room (not always, but often).

(DarkangelUK) #8

So no then, f2p shooters with in-game grinding to earn unlock credits don’t supply server binaries for privately hosted servers, cool.

(Runeforce) #9

The same could be said about all multiplayer shooters at some point in the past.

(DarkangelUK) #10

But that’s not what we’re talking about, and if we were then I could see his point but we aren’t.

(Kendle) #11

Would there be a need for dedicated server binaries if you could simply rent servers from Nexon or accredited partners? My team rented a BF3 server from Multiplay and that was ranked when in public mode, and un-ranked when a password was active, it’s not rocket science.

But so far we’ve seen no evidence that SD / Nexon are willing to go even that far.

No community run servers = no community = no longevity for this game.

(jazevec) #12

Publishers see lack of user-created content and servers as a good thing. If they control everything, they can charge you for new maps, servers etc. You don’t own the game, it’s a playground they kindly let you use. Even if you pay for it.

And Splash Damage ? Maybe it was a Quake 3 mod team once, but now it’s just another corporation with a good portion composed of console developers. I doubt modern SD would release mod tools and server binaries even if they could. Their lack of communication gives the impression they have no respect for players.

(DarkangelUK) #13

Has a game company ever released mod/map tools while their game is still in development and in beta stages?
Has a game company ever released mod/map tools while their game is still in development and in beta stages?
Killing Floor 2?

(DarkangelUK) #15

That’s a good example! I’d argue that it’s a coop game and mappers knew the requirements based on KF1 as it had a decent mapping scene, but yes nice.

(MoonOnAStick) #16

Oh definitely. It also helps that almost any map can be enjoyable for a few waves of KF, even Doom 2 E1M1 (taking nothing away from the fantastic official Tripwire maps). It just came to mind because it’s UE3 and I don’t think they made an official SDK available at first.
