Linux Client Bugs ?

(FallenMatt) #21
  1. try using startx , since that will launch the full session so you will be able to trouble shoot it
  2. check (depends on your distro) /var/log/XFree86.1.log for any errors, wierd things
  3. make sure you have correct path to the program - try launching the program with the full path from the command line as you do it with xinit, to check if the problem is with the path
  4. X will exit immidiatelly after the program you launched it as a “client” exits. So any problems with path, wrong program parameters etc will show up as what you described - X launches but immidiatelly exits

I get

AUDIT: Fri May 9 17:58:31 2003: 20647 X: client 1 rejected from local host
Xlib: connection to “:1.0” refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
in my terminal that I launch xinit from… I get this whether I run a program (xterm, et, etc) or not and also get it if I run as root or joe user… I have tried xhost + to turn off all access control but even that gets the same error seen above…

s0kud0 and HellToupee:

I get the same thing. I was reading the man page for xinit today and it has some good info in there on what is going on.

Another great source of info is the The Linux Documentation Project

Here is the user HOWTO for running X.

WTF is this -> :moo:

Try:

startx /your/path/to/program – :1

Or Alt-Tab or hit your start menu key and then you don’t wait for the map reload, and switching to your desktop this way is faster than in any linux variant. X just aint fast enough (yet). Oh yeah and theres much less crashing in windows…

So yeah its far better. I mean, you say anything enough times and you’ll start to believe it.

I do not have a start menu key. I neither have a windows key. I use the original IBM PS/2 keyboard, which I bought at ebay. Still the best keyboard all around, without annoying windows-keys.

The crashes are for ET-Test only, as there’s a bug in the Linux version of ET-Test. There are no crashes at all for other linux games, or linux software in general.

I don’t know much about the windows key-combinations, as I hardly use windows. I really got used to linux and I don’t like using windows.

Great…The linux thread has now been trolled. :disgust:

(HellToupee) #29

its we all know windows sucks.

(petameta) #30

Right g. Is there anything more to say ?

(g00se) #31

BTW…I have not played ET in two weeks now. I can’t play a game for more than a few minutes without it crashing X. Low player (6 or less total) seem to last the longest (Maybe half-hour…which I think is the record)

I like to set aside an hour or so for some good gaming but it just is not worth it at this point…to spend 50 percent of the time restarting X, game, logging onto server, and uggg…starting from scratch…or server is now full. :banghead:

Has anybody else had better success? I was wondering if you could bang out a something to not only start another X server with just ET running but also pass wolf the command:

/connect some_server_ip

Just some thoughts.

I’m suffering the same lockups and reported them to etbugs@idsoftware.com, but until today no answer as arrived.

You’ll probably beat me, but I believe that the game runs a bit longer if I try to play as root.

My setup:
AMD Athlon XP 1800
Geforce 4 Ti4200
512 MB Ram
Gentoo Linux 1.2

Bye,
CF

(FallenMatt) #33

yes, i had
i’ve installed windows version of ET under winex (from transgaming.com)
it works, it doesn’t like X server switching

but it doesn’t freeze or crash as the native linux client.

this is pretty stupid sollution having the linux client around and not being able to play it… oh well, waiting for the official full ET release now…

(HellToupee) #34

my one will only crash when i do certian things like change to allied side after a map change, and after the 3 game on campaign mode.

I also play on Linux with a single Nvidia card powering 2 monitors. Here’s what I do:

  1. Play et in windowed mode (I set my window manager (fvwm) to hide the TitleBar and Handles for the window though.
  2. From my XF86Config file:
    Option “MetaModes” “1600x1200,1600x1200;1024x768,1600x1200;800x600,1600x1200”
  3. When I start et, I place the window in the upper right corner of my left screen
  4. Hit Ctl-Alt-KP-

Then I’m left with a fullscreen wolf (800x600) in the left monitor, and my right monitor stays the same.

Typing a ~ goes to the wolf console and also releases the mouse cursor from the et window.

In regards to all the crashing reports in this thread, I have noticed NONE of them… I haven’t had a single et crash or hang. Here’s info on my system:

Dual P3 800, 512Mb, running Linux 2.4.20
Nvidia Quadro NVS (4363 drivers)
ISA SoundBlaster16 (using OSS driver that comes with kernel)
